Shogun And Sonnen To Headline In Boston

shogLight Heavyweights Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Chael Sonnen have been announced as the main event fight when the UFC returns to Boston.

Rua was expected to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161 but ‘Lil Nog’ was forced to withdraw from the fight due to injury.  Sonnen was expected to replace Nogueira at the event but it was decided that they would headline the UFC’s first event on Fox Sports 1.

“We were going to fight in Winnipeg (at UFC 161). We ended up moving the fight, they pulled ‘Shogun’ off the card completely. They’re going to match us up in a couple months,” Sonnen said on FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight.

Shogun is returning to the octagon following a loss against Alexander Gustafsson in December last year.  He will be looking to get back to winning ways against Sonnen who is also coming into this fight following a loss. Sonnen faced Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 159, the fight was stopped in the first round however via TKO.

Sonnen also lost to Middleweight champion Anderson Silva in his fight prior to that and he will be looking to put an end to his losing streak against Shogun.

The fight has been added to an already fantastic fight card which features the return of Conor McGregor to the octagon.  Having impressed in his promotional debut McGregor earned a fight against TUF Alumni Andy Ogle.

McGregor who competes at Featherweight is the first Irishman to win a fight in the UFC and he done so in spectacular fashion back in April when he won the Knockout of the Night award.

The event also features the return of Heavyweight Alistair Overeem who faces Travis Browne, and fan favourite Urijah Faber who fights Yuri Alacantara at Bantamweight.

Watch Shogun vs Sonnen on August 17 on Fox Sports 1.
