Irishman To Be Buried After Body Brought Home

barry_doherty-nA 25 year old Irishman whose body was discovered in a river in Scotland is to be buried tomorrow.

The body of Donegal native Barry Doherty has been brought home after it was discovered on July 24 in the water at Thornley Dam, Paisley.

He was last seen alive on July 15 in Paisley and was reported missing on July 18 after his family became concerned. He had been living in the area for some time.

His family had mounted an extensive campaign on Facebook, and distributing posters and leaflets.

Police joined the search, checking train companies and ports, in case he had travelled back to Ireland.

His sister Cathie described him as “ a really approachable guy, genial with a wicked big laugh but strong-minded and not someone who would be easily led down a road he didn’t want to go down” and “a real fan of the underdog”.

Renfrewshire police have confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A football jersey and flowers have been left at the scene in Paisley, some 20 kilometres from Glasgow,  where the body was recovered.

His funeral Mass will take place on Thursday morning at 11am in the Church of the Sacred Heart in his native Carndonagh.
