Irish Keeper Called Into City’s Champions League Squad

Ireland U-19 goalkeeper Ian Lawlor was last night promoted to Man City’s first-team squad for tomorrow’s Champions League visit to Viktoria Plzen, making him the only Irish player to feature in the tournament this season .

The 18-year-old had been due to face the Czech outfit in UEFA’s new youth version of the Champions League when he received the call from Manuel Pellegrini.

Lawlor will act as back-up to Joe Hart and reserve custodian Costel Pantilimon following a number of impressive performances which have alerted the club’s hierarchy.

The Dubliner has featured with the first team squad before but only in pre season when title wining manager Roberto Mancini was still in charge.

City have so far resisted the urge to allow Lawlor to move on loan as they believe the experience the teenager is gaining from working alongside England goalkeeper Hart in training will more beneficial at present.
