Irish Woman Among Three Stabbed At Sydney Hostel

A man has been charged following the stabbing of a 24 year old Irish woman outside a hostel in Sydney.

Two German tourists were also stabbed during the attack.

The 36-year-old man will appear in court later today after the tourists were attacked with a piece of broken glass at the Nomads Westend Backpackers hostel in Haymarket earlier this morning.

Police were called to the hostel about 2.15am and arrived to find two German men, both aged 19  and a 24-year-old Irish woman suffering from stab wounds.
They told police they had been confronted by a man who was believed to have emerged from a neighbouring halfway house.

The man allegedly began arguing with the trio and attacked them with a piece of broken glass.

Police said the woman was stabbed in the face, while one of the men was stabbed in the neck and the other in the arm.

Another man intervened in the fight and the alleged offender ran away. He is believed to have been tackled to the ground by a security guard before police arrived.

Blood could be seen smeared in the hostel foyer as a number of young people gathered at the front of the building to comfort each other.
Paramedics treated the injured trio at the scene before taking them to hospital.

One of the men is undergoing surgery for neck wound but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police say the woman may have to undergo microsurgery for injuries to her face.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man a short time later and took him to Sydney City Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and damaging property.

Police say it was not known if alcohol was involved but “mental health” issues may have been a factor.

The perpetrator was refused bail and will appear in court later today.
