Gardai Renew Appeal Over Stolen Radioactive Material


Gardaí investigating a burglary which occurred in Swords over the weekend of 27th to 29th September 2013 are renewing their appeal to warn the public of radioactive material that was taken during the course of the burglary.

The radioactive material taken is described as seven lightning preventers which were contained in a red metal box. They have the appearance of aluminium or stainless steel but are of no scrap value.

These are highly dangerous and should not be touched or approached.

They were used to prevent lightning damage to church spires and were stolen from the Balheary Road area of Swords. It is believed a traveller gang was responsible for the theft.

The Director of the Radiological Protection Institute Of Ireland, Dr Tom Ryan has  said the hazardous devices could contaminate anyone who came into contact with them, posing a long-term risk of cancer, and warned anyone who came across them to stay well clear and immediately notify the authorities.

If any person discovers these items or has any information as to where they are, they should

– Not approach or touch these items
