Mobster Gilligan Released From Jail

Convicted drug trafficker John Gilligan has been freed from Portlaoise Prison.

61 year old Gilligan, walked out of the prison just after 9.30am and was driven away in a grey Ford Mondeo with two associates.

The father of two was originally given a 28-year sentence in March 2001, which was reduced by eight years on appeal in 2003.

The Ballyfermot native has been released as he is entitled to remission.

It was a legal entitlement which was not impacted by his poor record while in jail which saw him caught in possession of mobile phones while also issuing threats against prison officers.

Gilligan, who was cleared of murdering journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996, was convicted of those crimes and his term of imprisonment was extended by additional short sentences.

A large media presence gathered outside the prison since early yesterday afternoon to witness his release.

They did so in the event the Irish Prison Service opted to release Gilligan early, as they did with convicted rapist Larry Murphy three years ago.
