The very best of the women and men of Ireland’s Premier League players will get an opportunity to represent the Emerald Isle when they take on a Wales selection team next Saturday in the National Basketball Arena. The woman’s team are set to take to the court for a 3 pm tip off whilst the men will play straight afterwards with a 5 pm tip off. Hopes are high for the men’s team after they recorded a massive upset back in January when they managed to travel to England and record a victory over our nearest rivals.

Mark Keenan was the head coach back then and Basketball Ireland have opted to keep the UL coach in charge for the first senior men’s International game to take place on these shores in nearly five years. Keenan named his team last week with 11 players coming from the newly named Premier League and one member hailing from a Division One club.

“Myself and the rest of the staff of the Premier Select Team are delighted to announce the following squad of 12 players to play against Wales on Saturday week October 26th,” said Coach Keenan.

“The team selection was based on rewarding players that were part of last January’s great victory over the England Select Team. Several players from that team are not available for selection for this game and therefore several new players have been introduced.

A mix of experienced International and young emerging players have been added to the team to replace those unavailable for selection this time. As a staff we are delighted with the enthusiasm showed by all players to be part of this team and are looking forward to a great game next week.”

The team in full is as follows:

Shane Coughlan – C&S UCC Demons
Niall O’Reilly – C&S UCC Demons

For the Women they will be coached by award winning coach James Weldon who is also currently with UL. Weldon named his team a number of weeks back and speaking at the launch stated that he was excited and was looking forward to the challenge.

“My management team and I are excited to be working with this talented group of players,” said Head Coach, James Weldon of UL Huskies.

“We’d like to thanks all the Premier League clubs who cast their votes and endorsed this Gathering backed initiative by selecting the best players in our league.

“The players will need no extra motivation for this game and donning the green jersey in front of a home crowd at the National Basketball Arena will make it all the more special.”
