Investigation Launched After Man Dies In Garda Custody

The Garda Ombudsman’s office has confirmed it is investigating an incident in which a man died in custody at a Donegal Garda station overnight.

It is understood the incident, which was referred by the Garda Commissioner, relates to the death in custody of a man at Buncrana Garda Station in Co Donegal in the early hours of this morning.

He has not been identified and no information has yet been given about the manner of his death.

No further details have been released but a post mortem is expected to be carried out this afternoon.

Speaking to the Donegal Democrat, Sinn Fèin North East TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said: “Any death of a person in Garda custody is a cause for public concern. “The law is now in place, though, which means an independent investigation is automatically carried out. This should give the public confidence that the full circumstances of the death will be fully and independently investigated.

“My heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased man at this sad time.”
