Irish Basketball Weekly Round Up

There was a big coup for Basketball Ireland during the week as they managed to secure live radio coverage for the draw for the semi finals of the National Cup. The draw is set to take place on RTE Radio 1 at 3pm on Saturday, 14th of December. The Saturday Sports Show attracts thousands of listeners every Saturday and is sure to add to the excitement of what is Basketball’s major competition.

A producer on the programme Robbie Irwin had this to say upon the announcement. “We are delighted to enhance the promotion of the National Cup by including the live draw in our programme. RTE Radio has covered the various stages of the competition for many years and this is a natural extension to that coverage.”

There was more good news this past week as “aertv” announced that they would broadcast a UL double header next weekend. UL Huskies take on Waterford Wildcats with the men’s team UL Eagles taking on Belfast Star. Coverage in the UL Sports Arena begins from 5pm.

UL Eagles will be looking to bounce back having suffered a defeat this Saturday to Bord Gais Neptune. It was a big upset as the Cork side also managed to prevent their Limerick counterparts picking up a losing bonus point. Neptune’s head coach Mark Scannell had the following to say.

“It looks like there are a number of us in the chase for the title so to not give them a bonus point was really important. There is so much that we have to work on to get where we need to be but bottom line is that I am delighted with the win.”

Elsewhere ,UCD Marian are still awaiting their first Premier League win as they went down to DCU Saints on a score line of 79-63.

In the Women’s Premier League, DCU Mercy beat Meteors, Team Montenotte Hotel beat Ulster Rockets whilst Liffey Celtics went down to WIT Wildcats. With all teams having suffered at least one defeat the Women’s game is having an exciting season on all accounts.
