Basketball Ireland Announce Two New Competitions

This past week Basketball Ireland have been hard at work announcing two brand new competitions for the season. The first is a shield competition for the U18 National Cup. This is open to any team that entered the U18 National Cup but failed to make the quarter final stage. This in my opinion is a great idea from Basketball Ireland and should encourage some smaller basketball clubs to enter the National Cup next season although one does have to wonder why they suddenly decided to announce this tournament mid way through the U18 season.

The second brand new competition Basketball Ireland announced was a school one as the good people up in Tallaght, Dublin revealed their proposed plans to have an U14 School’s All Ireland Cup this season. This is for mostly first year players although any second year players that happen to be born in the year 2000 are also eligible to take part. This competition will have major benefits for schools up North such as powerhouses Malachy’s  as they start Secondary school a year before children from the Republic Of Ireland.

I once again also believe that this is a great new tournament by Basketball Ireland who should be congratulated on looking to expand the Basketball landscape of the country. Let’s just hope they get the required eight teams for it to go ahead with the draw expected to be completed by the end of the week.
