Italian National Charged With Dublin Chess Murder

A 34 year old man of Italian origin has been charged with the murder of a man in Dublin early yesterday.

39 year old Thomas O’Gorman was severely beaten and stabbed to death in his home at Beechpark Avenue in Castleknock, in an attack which is linked to a dispute over the movement of a piece on a chessboard.

Gardaí last night arrested 34-year-old Saverio Bellante. The Italian who works in Dublin is originally from Palermo in Sicily. He has admitted killing Mr O’Gorman.

Following consultations, the Director of Public Prosecutions last night directed that Bellante, who lived as a tenant with O’Gorman for the past two and a half years, be charged with murder.

The suspect, who had been working with a pharmaceutical company, appeared at Blanchardstown District Court this morning where he was remanded in custody. He will appear in Cloverhill Court on Friday. He is ineligible for bail.

Mr O’Gorman’s death is the seventh violent death in Ireland since the turn of the year and the fifth in just a week.
