McPhail’s contract with English Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday comes to an end this month, allowing him to put pen to paper on a deal with the Hoops.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who has also played for Leeds United, Barnsley and Cardiff City will officially leave the Championship club on February 18 and link up with Rovers.

McPhail, who also has a number of full Irish international caps, has signed a one year contract with Shamrock Rovers.

Hoops boss, Trevor Croly said: “Stephen is a very good addition to our squad for the up-coming season. He is a quality player who has significant experience playing at a very high level. He will fit in well to the squad we have built for the new season and blends in well with the mix of experience, talent and youth we have put together. He is proven to have a strong, committed character and is very keen to come and do well here well at Shamrock Rovers.”
