The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is investigating a fatal crash which occurred in County Kildare last night.

An innocent woman (43) died as she became caught up in a high speed pursuit between Gardai and a group of youths.

The crash happened at junction 13 of the M7 before 9pm last night.

Gardaí were pursuing the Dublin bound vehicle, which had five male occupants, after they were informed the vehicle broke through the toll bridge near Portlaoise without paying.

As the car continued on approach to Dublin, a local woman entered the motorway at junction 13 in her Citroen. Her car was then struck by the men’s car in a high-speed collision and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The five men, one aged 13, travelling in the other car were taken to hospital. Their injuries are said to be serious but not thought to be life-threatening.

Two Gardaí were also treated for minor injuries but were released overnight.

Gardaí are attempting to see if the gang has any links to a number of robberies that occurred in County Tipperary yesterday afternoon.

GSOC has appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist the investigation, to come forward and contact them.
