Sligo Sign Danish Striker Nielsen

Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of Danish striker Morten Nielsen from German club FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt.

The 24 year old began his career at FC Copenhagen before being signed by Chelsea at the age of 16.

Nielsen spent three years at Stamford Bridge in their youth academy. While there Nielsen played in the Chelsea team which made it to the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2008 against Man City.

After leaving Chelsea he signed for AZ Alkmaar who were the reigning Dutch champions at the time.

He spent one season there which included a loan spell in Sweden to join Landskrona, a club he had previously played for on loan from Chelsea in 2009.

In 2010 Neilsen signed for Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland where he spent two seasons. From there he moved to Germany and played for FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt, a club in the third tier of German football.

He is a former Danish underage international having played at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-19 level scoring seven times.

Speaking about the signing, Sligo manager Owen Heary said “He is a goalscorer first and foremost. We done our research with Gerry Cassidy and found a high calibre player. He has scored goals wherever he has been. He was at Chelsea for a few years when he was young training with players like Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.

“He comes with a good pedigree, his father was a Danish international and he played underage international football too. He’s a young player who has a bit about him and is the sort of player we were looking for. There was a few clubs in Scotland looking to sign him so I’m delighted he has chosen to come to Rovers.

“I think he will bring different strengths to the strikers we already have, Ruairi Keating and Dinny Corcoran. It was an area we wanted to strengthen. I think we have good attacking options now with a good mix of pace and strength. There is a good blend of young players with experience from the likes of Alan Keane, Gavin Peers and Raf Cretaro to help bring the younger players through.

“I think he will be able to settle in quickly. He has played with Chelsea for a few years so he will be used to the culture and speaks very good English. He has played at a high level so hopefully he will be able to hit the ground running. I am very happy with the squad we have put together now.”

He becomes the eighth signing made by new manager Owen Heary following the arrivals of Ryan Coulter, Stephen Folan, Eoin Wearen, Keith Ward, Steven Beattie, Kevin Devaney and Dinny Corcoran.

It takes Heary’s squad up to 21 players.

The team will return for pre-season training tomorrow seven and a half weeks ahead of the start of the new season on March 7th when Rovers will play Cork City at the Showgrounds.

Nielsen will be unveiled at a press conference at 4pm in the Showgrounds tomorrow.
