Funniest Sports Quotes

sportsquotes

We have heard them all over the years but I must say that I did get a laugh from revisiting some of these classics. Some are just comments that haven’t been thought through, others are from sports people that probably still can’t see the funny side and others are just from those that are plain thick and yes Kevin Keegan does appear in the list more than once. Brian O’Driscoll once said that, ‘knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad’. The Rise Of Special Olympics Ireland

November 25th 1963, the eyes of the world are firmly fixed on Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. A heroic figure has been cut down in his prime. A 42 year old woman stands idly by as she watches her brother lowered into the ground. Amidst the backdrop of her sibling’s successes, it is now her time to create some history of her own.

One year prior to the death of her brother Eunice Kennedy Shriver had a vision. She invited young people with intellectual disabilities to a day camp in her own back garden, sowing the seeds for the foundation of the Special Olympics – an organisation that would grow into a global movement and change the lives of millions. Friday night saw one of the greatest if not the greatest Womens Cup final of all time as UL Huskies were defeated in overtime by Team Montenotte Hotel Cork. A sold out crowd at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght saw defending champions UL defeated as Irish coach James Weldon squared off against another Irish coach in Paul Kelleher. UL were chasing their third straight National Cup but it wasn’t to be although the girls from Limerick have to be praised for their spirited fight back having looked dead and buried at half time in this one.

The Men’s final was never going to outplay the Women’s fixture as UCC Demons comfortably got the better of shock cup finalists Dublin Inter. Inter , who are made up mainly of Lithuanian players , shot well from behind the three point line but after keeping in touch with their Cork counterparts for much of the first quarter they fell away as the game progressed. The game marked a fantastic achievement from Demons captain Shane Coughlin as he collected his fifth National Cup winners medal. Continue reading
