Ballance Ready To Take Back His Title At Summerbrawl

gbIrish News Review columnist Gary “Bingo” Ballance will defend his title for the first time at Celtic Championship Wrestling’s upcoming Summerbrawl event at The Forum in Waterford when he faces Vic Viper on Saturday August 10th.

Ballance became the first ever CCW champion when he beat Nicky M in a semi final match before disposing of Irish Dragon, The Executioner and Vic Viper in a fatal four way final at CCW Revolution back in May. However having sealed the win Ballance didn’t leave the arena with the gold after Viper stole his title, setting up a grudge match at Summerbrawl. Continue reading

The Ballance Sheet #5 : Grappling In The Granite City

bbLast Saturday, I had the privilege of being part of a terrific show in Aberdeen, Scotland, and wrestling in front of the biggest crowd I’ve ever worked in front of; an astounding 1,103 people packed out the Beach Ballroom, and were loud and lively all evening long, celebrating the fifth anniversary of Wrestlezone.

I’ve done shows in front of big audiences before, but this one felt that little bit more special. Knowing the Wrestlezone crew as I have for the past four years- and the hard work they put into growing their promotion- I was delighted to witness the fruits of their labour for myself, up close and personal, and the phenomenal success of their big night.  Continue reading

The Ballance Sheet #4 : Smart Fans Allow Wrestlers To Up Their Game

The crowd at the post-WrestleMania episode of Raw this week was, I think many would agree, one of the rowdiest and liveliest that WWE have had in quite some time. While some of the reactions weren’t the ones desired- particularly for the Sheamus/Orton match and Ryback’s heel turn- the noise throughout the night, from some of the bizarre antics and chants, made for an exceptionally entertaining show.

The crowd at the Izod Center in New Jersey was quite different from your regular episode of Raw, in that it was composed of holidaying die-hard fans from all over the world; a so-called “smart mark” audience. Get a “smart” audience on your side, and you’re pretty much made. Lose them, though, and the reaction you get could border on vitriolic, as seen from Sheamus and Orton’s match. Such is the interesting dichotomy of this particular branch of the wrestling audience. Continue reading

The Ballance Sheet #3 : Solid Crowd Ignites Top Performers

Hey, folks. I’m Gary Ballance, and this is my guide to the often weird, occasionally wonderful world of independent wrestling.

Last time, I went through a few of the factors that go into a successful show, and the various ways fate can intervene and mess them up. This next element deserves its own article: the crowd.

The crowd is the lifeblood of any successful show. For the promoter, a large crowd means tickets sold and costs covered. Large enough, and it could also mean the difference between breaking even and actually making a profit. Continue reading

CCW blows the roof off with St. Paddy’s Day Massacre

Image

Celtic Championship Wrestling returned to Cork with a bang on Sunday night. To kick off the show, we were introduced to the new CCW Commissioner, Luke Barry. Barry was quick to declare that he was here to “bring CCW to the next level.” He then revealed the first CCW Champion will be crowned, via an eight-man tournament, at Revolution on May 5th. Lone Wolf then came out and interrupted the new Commissioner, stating his case for being entered in the tournament. This led to the creation of the night’s main event, where Lone Wolf would have to fight Big Bad Hynesie in a street fight, which he had to win to get into the tournament.
