Is Piracy Responsible For The Failings Of Expendables 3?


Prior to its cinematic release, The Expendables 3 was discovered to have been leaked online. The high quality screener copy of the film was quickly snapped up by hungry pirates all over the world, ready for their fix of blood, violence and quippy one-liners. Lionsgate, the distribution company, immediately reacted by demanding sites be taken down and the torrent removed. But, as with all things on the internet, once it is online it is staying there and the screener is still available to many internationally.

Huge torrent sites, such as Kick Ass, have removed the film entirely from their sites fearing more vigorous attacks from Lionsgate through the courts. The company has seen the film underachieve at the box office, and the current consensus is that this is due to piracy. The matter of financial gain versus quality art is more apparent than ever in the modern industry, and regardless of personal feelings towards the act of piracy it is becoming a more and more heavily debated social topic. Are the pirates ruining the film industry? Or is the greed of the Hollywood system destroying film? All films require profit to be a success in the eyes of the production company, and many of the lower budget films released do not have the financial backing to stand up to the economic consequences of piracy. The Expendables 3 may be a big budget, Hollywood picture filled to the rafters with A-Listers, but that does not mean piracy will not negatively effect the future of the much loved action franchise. Further, if Lionsgate, who have the financial means to attack the sites, and are able to do so, then legally they are within their right. More so, being more powerful in terms of financial backing they have a responsibility to do so to protect themselves and smaller budget films and companies. White House Down


After The Day after Tomorrow, 2012 and Independence Day director Roland Emmerich has now decided it’s time to blow up the White House from within. No natural disasters or aliens needed, this time a handful of terrorists and a few corrupt politicians is all it takes. But of course there is a hero to hand to save the day.

John Cale (Channing Tatum) calls in a few favours and interviews for a job as secret service agent. Unlucky for him agent Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is not only sceptical of his abilities but knows him from his not so dashing past. Trying to not disappoint more women in his life Cale takes his angry teenage daughter Emily (Joey King) on a tour of the White House and of course politics obsessed Emily bumps into the President (Jamie Foxx). Ben Affleck To Star In Next Bat Flick

batmanThe question that has been repeated almost to an extent of nausea ever since Comic-Con this year has finally been answered with the revelation that Ben Affleck is to be the new Batman. Many people have been left flabbergasted at the choice with stars such as Armie Hammer, Jon Hamm and even for a time Orlando Bloom rumored to take up the cape and cowl. Alot of criticism has been poured out over the internet by fan boys incensed Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder could come to such a decision. Film 2013 : A Preview Of What’s To Come

Like last year 2013 brings  a lot of big blockbuster movies filled with comic book superheroes, sequels and 80’s remakes. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Tom Cruise are back in the mix, saving the world and killing all the bad guys. Even Stephanie Meyers can’t leave us alone after her schmalzy “Twilight Saga” has finally come to an end and gives us a parasitic alien in the form of Saoirse Ronan. Sometimes it really does feel like Hollywood has run out of ideas and just regurgitates what has already proven to be box-office gold. But that isn’t always a bad thing, as you’ll know what you’re getting for your money when you buy a ticket.

Here is a quick rundown of some of the big films coming out throughout the year, but as we know in films, timelines are fluid so see the months as guidelines not craved in stone.


January starts of with a big bang and Arni in “The Last Stand”. Schwarzenegger is the disgraced LAPD officer Ray Owens who is serving out his time in the sleepy little town Summerton Junction. When drug lord Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) shows up all hell breaks lose and Schwarzenegger is back to his good old standard of killing people with big guns. Maybe not a film for the Oscars but if you like action movies and are an Schwarzenegger fan “The Last Stand” won’t disappoint, even if the plot is a little weak and the acting a little wooden.

Other Films like “Lincoln”, “The Sessions” and Django Unchained” have already been winning prizes and if you want to know more about them just follow the links.

February is filled with lots of light-hearted comedy in Films like “This is 40”, “Parental Guidance”, “I Give It A Year” and “Wreck-it Ralph”. But there is a good balance with dramas like Oscar nominee “Flight” and Bafta nominee “Hitchcock”.


However the biggest blockbuster could possibly be action film “A Good Day to Die Hard”. Bruce Willis returns as John McClane and this time it’s his son Jack (Jai Courtney) who needs help. When he discovers that his son is actually a CIA agent trying to prevent the Russians from blowing up the world with nuclear weapons the father and son team up and try and save the day.

March is a month of science fiction and fantasy with “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” tracking down evil hags and killing them. “G.I Joe” makes a return to cinemas and  Percy Jackson, Poseidon’s son, is also back in “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”. Nicholas Hoult is “Jack the Giant Slayer” and Saoirse Ronan plays “The Host” to a parasitic alien.


The one to watch is probably “Elysium”. With Director Neil Blomkamp (District-9) at its helm this sci-fi thriller looks promising. In the year 2159 the human population is split in two, the very wealthy who live on the man made space station Elysium and the rest who live in the slums of earth. Matt Damon plays the hero Max who is trying to bring equality back. Jodie Foster is his adversary Secretary Delacourt who will stop at nothing to keep the wealthy rich.


April, this is where things start to get a little hazy but it looks like we’ll be seeing a remake of Stephen King’s “Carrie” return to the big screen.  Chloe Grace Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick Ass) replaces Sissy Spacek as Carrie, a shy high school kid who discovers her telekinetic powers and unleashes some supernatural nastiness on her peers.  And it could be that this is the month that we see Tom Cruise again in his upcoming film “Oblivion”.

May could be the mega month of releases with “Iron Man 3”, “Star Trek 2”, “The Hangover 3”, “Fast Six” (Fast and the Furious franchise) and the  Lone Ranger all hoping to lure us into the cinema.

Although the “Lone Ranger” is a new project for Walt Disney Pictures it does reunite Johnny Depp and his Pirates Director Gore Verbinski.  Depp is Tonto who tells the tales of John Ried (Armie Hammer) or the Lone Ranger as he’s better known.


But May is also said to be the month that the long awaited “Great Gatsby “ finally graces our screens.  With Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Toby Maguire as Nick Carraway it looks like it could have been worth the wait.

June brings back the “Man of Steel”. This time round it’s handsome Henry Cavill (Cold Light of Day) who is clad in the blue tights and red panties but that isn’t his only support, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Laurance Fishburne all make an appearance.

Brad Pitt may prove all doubters wrong that the project “World War Z” was filmable after all, when we see him starring in the Paramount production.


And Hugh Jackman has let his hair grow again for his starring role in “The Wolverine”. This time around it’s off to Japan, who knows maybe those claws will prove useful when making sushi.

But Will Smith is also back in M Night Shyamalan’s “After Earth”. This action Sci-fi  film is only directed by Shyamalan so hopefully it will be better than “The Last Airbender”.

July reunites Stephen Spielberg with science fiction in his film “Robopocalypse”. The film is based on the book by Daniel H Wilson and seems quite similar to “I, Robot”.


But again Hollywood gives us sequels with “Grown-ups 2” “The Smurfs 2”and “Dispicable Me 2”, and “Jurassic Park” will be stomping its way back into Cinemas in 3D on it’s 25th (yes really) birthday.

“Dirty Dancing” is being re-made and said to be released in June. But after the disastrous “Total Recall”, “Fame” and “Footloose” reboots of the last few years maybe this isn’t such a wise idea. After all can anyone really replace Patrick Swayze as Jonny and Jennifer Grey as Baby? Some films should just be left alone!


August gives us the return of the retired, extremely dangerous crowd in “RED 2”, who knows maybe like “The Expendables” this will be better second time round. But “300:Battle of Artemisia” will at least give us scantily clad men with eight packs to watch, even I do yell a lot! And even “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” and “Robocop” seem to be on the list of films to come out in the middle of Summer.

As for the rest of the films that are coming out this year things seem to be even less plannable. But some of the other 2013 big blockbusters that will be beckoning you to take a seat and nibble some pop-corn are:

 I haven’t been a great fan of the time-travelling concept in films due to the confusion that ensues in trying to understand what’s going on , Donnie Darko for example, but I have to admit this is a brilliant film. Directed by newcomer Rian Johnson, who came to prominence after his critically acclaimed 2005 film Brick, the movie delivers far beyond any expectations I had of such a novice. It really has it all. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, arguably the most popular and in-demand actor at present, teams up with the legend that is Bruce Willis in what is a non-stop action feature. Greed, romance and longing for an escape lead to one violent concoction in this supernatural sci-fi drama.

The plot centres around a time-travelling loop where time-travel is present in the future but the future is the present so that future is thirty years further into the future…..still with me?  Let me start over.  It is the year 2044 and time travel will have been invented thirty years into the future, 2074, but banned immediately. Underground gangs will use this to their advantage in killing people and disposing of their bodies. They can’t get rid of evidence in the future because everyone is fitted with identification devices so the only way is to send the bodies alive in to the past and have a looper, specially chosen assassin, take care of it, thus wiping clean all evidence of that person’s existence.

Sooner or later a looper will be required to kill the future version of themselves so the criminal gang knows their secret is safe. They are paid well for this, living comfortably on death-row for the next three decades until their self-inflicted death in 2074.  Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is a young looper in the present who works for Abe (Jeff Daniels), a relatively sane mob boss who acts like a father figure to Joe. His life soon spirals out of control due to an ever-growing drug habit and a violent incident involving his best friend. On one mission, Joe of the future or Old Joe (Bruce Willis) appears in front of Joe untied and uncovered. He escapes and both men are left running from Abe and his men who plan to close Joe’s loop.

Furthermore, telekinetic powers exist  in every one in ten people but only in the useless ability to hover a coin above ones hand. This all changes with the birth of ‘The Rainman’ who has devastating telekinetic powers which he uses to rule the ‘five cities’ in the future. He is a dark lord of a man perceived to have been brought to bring destruction and doom upon everyone. He can only be stopped in the past when he’s a child of Sara (Emily Bunt). Old Joe is determined to prevent ‘The Rainman’ from ever maturing into his future self as he had a devastating effect on his own life.

Bruce Willis is reminiscent of his finest Die Hard days, without the hair of course,  in which his ruthless actions speak great volumes leading you to hang on every word of his relatively infrequent dialogue. Joseph Gordon-Levitt equally delivers the high quality performance we’ve come to expect in which he acts between a stone-cold killer and a lost young man, playing the  timid hard-ass role to perfection.  The suspense created from the battle between past and future , results hindering on an apocalyptic ending or not, make this an uncontrollably fixating watch and I will go as far as saying this is one of the best films of the year. Yes the plot is illogical and admittedly you do find yourself spending the first twenty minutes trying to wrap your head around all of the intricacies but once understood it becomes a truly enjoyable watch.

The Raid Redemption

This action packed cop-film isn’t really like anything you have ever seen before.  The Raid is a fast paced martial arts film that not only twists its characters bodies into impossible shapes but it twists your mind too, as you can’t help but watch in horror as blood, body parts and every weapon you can conceive of, and some you would never even dream of, invade the screen and never give you a moment to breathe.

Like most action movies The Raid has a simple storyline, a SWAT team invades an old derelict apartment building in an attempt to take down a crime lord. But as soon as they enter the building everything goes wrong.  There are surveillance cameras everywhere and they are being watched from every angle on every floor in addition to being heavily outnumbered.  Getting in to the building may have been difficult but now they have to fight their way back out.

Of course there is a hero, Rama (Iko Uwais) a rooky cop with a pregnant wife and as it turns out his own agenda. Other than that there are few characters of interest as most of them are dispensable, which they are along the way.  But there is Jaka (Joe Taslim) the right hand man of the boss and Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) who you quickly learn to hate, fear and be amazed at.

Like Die Hard or the Bourne series The Raid is always on the verge of disbelief but unlike Bruce Willis or Matt Damon, Iko Uwais is not a strong enough lead to make a real hero. While you do root for him and hope he makes it out alive he hasn’t got the screen presence or “it-factor” to make a true action icon.  But what he does have is speed and a very flexible bendy body; defying any anatomical possibility he gets punched, kicked and contorted to the extreme. Welsh director Gareth Evans uses Uwais’ strengths and focuses mainly on full body shots so the viewer can appreciate the choreography of the martial scenes, which is basically the whole film.

But if Uwais is lithe and acrobatic his opponent Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) is on a whole other level. This 44-year-old martial arts instructor does thing to his body that are surreal. He seems to feel no pain and no matter what hits him, confines him or should break him he just keeps going like the Duracell bunny, only one made out of rubber. Ruhians fighting scenes are the true highlights of the film and thankfully there are many.

With no real dialogue to speak of, mainly just grunting, screaming and hand signals, it does not matter that The Raid has sub-titles.  This film in unashamedly violent and makes no excuses for using machetes when a knife would do or killing people off like flies.

The Raid is a great film for all who love great one-on-one or one-on-many combat scenes, enjoy the goriness of blood and can stomach the harsh brutality of seeing death in vivid action on the big screen.
