Rabo Round Up – Munster Crash Back Down To Earth

image

Well, that was deflating. Rob Penney went for a raft of changes after Munster’s thrilling defeat of Toulouse but it’s possible he underestimated Glasgow a touch too much. Leinster and Connacht won’t want to remember this weekend anytime soon either, Ulster on the other hand bounced back immensely with a comprehensive, and injury riddled, victory over the latter. Rabo – Connacht Fight For European Qualification

image

Ah yes the news has finally officially come, the Heineken Cup is no more. Next year it will be replaced with the European Rugby Champion’s Cup (or, ERCC, hmmmm) and as well as having a second tier challenge cup there will also be a third tier competition. Arguably this is the best news of the entire deal, and that the ERC could never pull it off maybe justifies their exit from proceedings. The biggest news from this announcement however is that Connacht now know for certain that the final leg of the Rabo is crucial for their European dreams. Continue reading

Leinster v Newport Gwent Dragons

Leinster have been impressive so far this season, proving to be a very strong team and it will take something special to beat them. Newport Gwent Dragons might not possess the same strengths as some other Welsh clubs but should still be capable of putting in a good performance on their home patch. Leinster will be weakened by Irish players preparing for the Autumn internationals so this game is most certainly in the melting pot and the Dragons have a solid chance of coming out on top.

Munster 19 – 15 Leinster

A Keith Earls try was the crucial score that separated the sides in Thomond Park on Saturday night.

Leinster started better with two early penalties converted by Ian Madigan to give them a six point lead early in the first half. Munster began piling on the pressure shortly after and got their first score from the boot of Ian Keatley. Madigan interfered with play after some good surging play from Munster and he was sin binned for the remainder of the half. A brilliant cross field kick by Keatley found Earls who side-stepped the defender to give Munster a well deserved lead, with Keatley following up with the conversion. Fergus McFadden converted a penalty just before half time in the absence of Madigan to leave them trailing, Munster 10-9 Leinster. Continue reading

Leinster 34 – 20 Cardiff Blues

Brian O’Driscoll began his final season of rugby on a winning note as he helped Leinster claim a bonus point 34-20 win against Cardiff Blues at the RDS.

Leinster showed how good they are in the first half when Sean Cronin scored an early try to give them some daylight in this encounter with Ian Madigan duly sending the conversion between the posts. Both sides exchanged penalties with both Madigan and Leigh Halfpenny converting two each to give Leinster a 13-6 lead at the interval.

Filo Paulo’s 47th-minute yellow card preceded a penalty try for Leinster, however a tremendous solo effort from Alex Cuthbert kept the Welsh region in the hunt. Continue reading
