Athlone Town –v- UCD    7:45

Bottom side Athlone Town welcome UCD to the Athlone Town Stadium.

The 2-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers on Tuesday was not unexpected, but would have been disheartening to Athlone Town after getting their first point in the previous game. They will consider this game an opportunity and will look to take advantage of their opponents inconsistent form and land that badly needed win.

UCD will be extremely pleased with their 1-1 draw with St Patrick’s Athletic last week. That result lifted them into ninth position and gave them some breathing room over the bottom sides. They will be looking for and expecting win here over a poor side, but need to be prepared and organised or they may leave the game with nothing. Continue reading

Bohemians –v- Limerick    7:45

In form Bohemians take on out of form Limerick at Dalymount Park.

Goals from Daniel Byrne, Jason Byrne and a James O’Brien o.g. gave Bohemians a 3-1 away win over rock bottom Athlone Town on Monday. That win lifts Bohs to fifth, four points off top spot. The Dublin side will look to continue their fine run of form by taking all three points from their struggling opponents.

Having not played on Monday, Limerick find themselves second from bottom and still looking for their first win of the season. This game will be their sixth attempt, fail and they may just find themselves falling into a rut that they will struggle to free themselves of. Stuart Taylor and his side know a big performance is needed here and it’s time his side delivered.

Athlone Town –v- Bohemian FC    7:45

Rock bottom Athlone Town host Bohemians at Athlone Town Stadium.

Five games, five defeats, it has been a miserable start to the season for newly promoted side Athlone Town. The euphoria of promotion and the excitement of competing at the top level have worn away quickly. Now even this early it’s all about survival. Mick Cooke and his side need points and fast or their misery will just go on and on.

The 1-1 draw with Bray Wanderers on Friday was a good result for Bohemians. Currently sitting in sixth position, Bohs need to find a way to turn their draws into wins. If manager Owen Heary and his players can find a way, then Bohemians could find themselves challenging for the league or at the very least a European place.

Prediction: Away win  Continue reading

Drogheda United 3-2 UCD

Drogheda United continued their push up the table with a victory against winless UCD. Right from the off it looked like UCD would continue that fruitless spell they have been on of late. Drogheda dominated the opening exchanges as they pounded the Students goal first with a shot by David Cassidy and then with three straight corners. However Mark McGinley continued to stand firm, as he let nothing get past him.

The opening 15 minutes by all accounts was a scrappy midfield affair with neither goalkeeper really tested. The game got its opening goal just after the 20 minute mark when Gavin Brennan’s tricky run down the left wing caused all kinds of problems for Gareth Mathews, the ball was then played across the face of the goal for the simplest of finishes by Gary O’ Neill. This is a position the Students have become all too familiar with this season. Continue reading
