The Hidden Price Of Household Gadgets

Perhaps there’s no solution to the problems the world faces. Perhaps all these supposed problems on energy depletion and climate change are a hoax, but you can choose to believe that everything’s a lie or stick to a truth and settle with that and avoid being punched by the people you accuse of lying, like that time when Buzz Aldrin punched a disrespectful man to his moonless face.

Fortunately, there is hope. Did you know there are babies right now who instinctively don’t cut their food to pieces before they swallow them? Did you know there’s an Innovation Article from The New Yorker that surveys today’s babies and the early signs of their potential in saving the Earth’s energy? That just makes you feel terrible, because you’re not as sensitive as they are. Don’t worry; it’s never too late. Here’s an infographic that can help you care about the world more. Who knows, you might be the next Edward Snowden or the next protagonist of Allan Hollinghurst’s next adaptation of a Nick Joaquin novel after you read stuff about your electric energy.

News in Brief – Ireland Falls To A New Kind Of Criminal

Enda’s been away on a mission before the taste of Turkey has barely left our lips. Good old Enda, what would we do without him? Well, actually while he’s been away the Limerick City of Culture Committee has crumbled further. CEO Patricia Ryan has now resigned from her 18 month, €120,000 salary job. NIB said didn’t we?! We said last week it was going to get silly and it has.

Not only has Ryan been resigned to giving up the job (and its accompanying cash) now there are allegations of phone hacking as someone let slip of her departure on a blog an hour before she made an official statement. It’s hardly whistleblowing on an Edward Snowden scale. Talking to RTE Radio 1 an artist involved described the whole thing as ‘like a big game’ before painstakingly going through each play; ‘the players have come out on the pitch . . . there’s been an upset . . . the whistle goes’ yeah we get the idea. It’s a game, Monopoly, the Limerick version. Continue reading

Former NSA contractor, Edward Snowden, has made a broad appeal for asylum to a number of countries around the globe, including Ireland. The requests were made to a number of countries including Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and Venezuala. Snowden recently withdrew his request for asylum in Russia, following comments by Vladimir Putin that he would only be welcomed in Russia if he discontinued “his work at bringing harm” to the US.

Snow Joke As Edward Gives America The Run Around

The United States has increased pressure on Russia to hand over former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, who is believed to be hiding out in Moscow while waiting for news of an asylum request to Ecuador.

However Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Snowden has not crossed into Russian territory, rejecting US demands to extradite the National Security Agency leaker, who continues to evade justice.

Lavrov said that accusing Russia of “violation of US laws and even some sort of conspiracy” with regard to Snowden is “absolutely ungrounded and unacceptable.” Continue reading
