News in Brief – Vatican F-Bombs And Ash Wednesday Woes


It’s all kicking off in the Football Association of Ireland after a 14-year-old boy was allegedly subjected to racial abuse during a school cup match. The African born player was taunted with “monkey chants” every time he touched the ball causing the referee to suspend the match. Classy. It’s possible the noises were misinterpreted though, have you seen the kind of people that follow football? For some of them this might actually as much grasp as they have on language.

Time To Scrap The First Division?


League of Ireland – First Division no more?

The Airtricity League First Division Promotion Play-off will be settled in just four days, for now, we do not know what’s going to happen with one of the club’s involved – Mervue United.

The Football Association of Ireland have told us already the plans are in place for one Galway based club to begin playing in the Airtricity League First Division as of next year. This would create a seven team league below the Premier Division.

The play-off fixtures are quite simple and have been for the last two years. Second and third placed finishers in the First Division battle it out in a two-legged tie to see who will face the side that finished second last of the Airtricity League Premier Division. The winner of that game will either be relegated or promoted. However, in Mervue United’s case it doesn’t really matter. Continue reading
