Wrestling is fascinating. It doesn’t fit neatly within any one category of entertainment, yet its very hybrid nature means it has mass appeal across a number of genders and demographics. It’s watched by people for various reasons, and different aspects of the production appeal to different people. Some latch on to the over-the-top storylines; like a soap opera for guys. Some enjoy the matches, others the characters. Others, still, watch for different reasons entirely. There is truly something for everyone, though – wrestling is, at the end of the day, a variety show.

Similarly, the reasons people have for actually getting involved in wrestling vary. I’ve met people from such a diverse selection of backgrounds through wrestling- it’s truly incredible. Continue reading

IFTA Reveals Shortlist Of Nominees

The Irish Film and Television Academy have announced the shortlist of nominees in 40 strongly contested categories for the 11th annual Irish Film and Television Awards, which takes place on Saturday 5th April at the DoubleTree at Hilton Burlington Road and broadcast primetime on RTÉ ONE (reaching 1.24 Million viewers last year).

Nominations are announced in categories across film and television, celebrating the highest standard of Irish talent over the past twelve months. All IFTA’s categories have been shortlisted by Members of the Irish Film & Television Academy alongside a select Jury panel of industry experts from around the world.  IFTA received 311 titles submitted for consideration in the 2013 Awards. News in Brief- McGuinness & Healy Rae Slip Up As C Word Banned From The Dàil

So last week we were feeling optimistic, this week we find out burglary, extortion and hijacking offences are up 34 per cent. But murder is down! Hurrah! But let’s not dwell . . .

In an online report ’controversial’ politician Michael Healy-Rae has apparently called for rural dwellers to be allowed to own guns to protest themselves. No that wasn’t a typo by News in Brief. But presumably a rather large one online. Else the austerity protests are about to take a nasty turn. Continue reading
