News In Brief: Criminal Does A Runner As Gardai Takeaway

Abrakebabra or Macaris? You decide! (image: soundtrackcollector.com)

Abrakebabra or Macaris? You decide! (image: soundtrackcollector.com)

Up first in our brief news this week a classic crime story that could only happen on our fair Isle. A dangerous criminal escaped from Garda custody as the lads in blue pulled their van over at a chipper. Sure you can’t fight crime when you’re starving! The public have been warned not to approach the criminal who is potentially dangerous, while the Gardai released a statement saying they preferred Abrakebabra to Macari’s.

Google have released the results of top searched for items in Ireland this year. It included such news stalwarts as the World Cup and Garthgate as well as the Greyhound recycling debacle. Amongst the predictable searches was Kim Kardashian’s arse and the death of Robin Williams but the real state of the nation was demonstrated in our second most popular googled question? How to… shift. What a romantic bunch we are. Continue reading

The Intrusion Of Social Networking

Facebook1

Social Networking website Facebook offers international communication for all its users, seemingly for free; but as we all know- nothing comes free in this world. Facebook users on mobile devices such as phone are now unable to access the messaging service unless they install the new splintered app. Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg intends to monetise the app, apparently at the cost of the user. This move goes against everything social networking stands for – but it is not the most concerning aspect of the newly formatted service.

The app promises that it is faster than the built in messenger system and Facebook boast that they have seen 20% of messengers are responding quicker. This is an interesting claim from the multi-billion dollar company considering that Facebook uses an instant message system. How can a message be received any quicker than instantly? The only way instant messages can be responded to any quicker is if the notification system is improved to deliver notice of the message received and that would not require a new, separate app from Facebook – which is what the new messenger system is. News In Brief: Burton In Hot Water As Baby Theo Goes Worldwide

burton

Let it be known, this was the week in which NIB curled up into a ball and died inside.

Theo Horan (Niall’s 1-year-old nephew, in case you didn’t know) now has his own website in what can only be described as mind crushingly insane. Honestly, you know those auditionees off X-Factor that make you feel squirmy, this is like that except not only does NIB feel squirmy but also genuinely worried for Niall’s brother, father of Theo, Greg who seems to think he’s the sixth member of One Direction. Not only can you now visit the site, you can also sign up for a regular newsletter because the proud parents ‘just can’t believe how amazing our fans are’. “Our fans” Greg? Really?

Two fools tried to sell two tickets to a non-existent Kodaline gig for a fiver apiece, but were caught out when they tried to tout them to two members of the band. Ah the heady price of fame. To be fair NIB isn’t sure we’d recognise them on the street either, unable as we are, to commit a single one of their songs to memory.

In more musical news a petition has been mounted to get Joan Burton to apologise to heavy metal fans who she suggested would be far more troublesome than Garth Brooks fans, another example of the minister’s inability to see what’s going on in the real world, after Garth-gate caused protests and general outrage across the country.  So far over 357 outraged rockers have signed the petition to tar Metallica fans in particular, with a far nicer brush. Despite the trademark tattoos and body piercings they insist they wouldn’t harm a fly, a country music loving farmer from Roscommon though, that’s a different matter. Continue reading

Musician Damien Dempsey has cemented his place in Wexford’s own Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of fame after rescuing two ailing swimmers in the River Slaney, before drying himself off and carrying on to his scheduled gig. What a man. He didn’t even mention it afterwards. According to reports he swam him, towed the swimmers back to safety, got out, picked up his shoes and walked off into the sunset. Honest to God. Dempsey for president!

Why Women Are The Real Power Behind Social Media

social-media-infographic

We had fun checking social media demographics surveys from different credible sources like Pew Research Center and Burst Media and we were able to pluck out some distinct patterns that suggest women are taking over social media and we’ve turned the data into a nice infographic.

The infographic shows that women not only use social media more often than men, but they use these sites in more ways.  More women also use the top social media sites and they dominate the visual-type social websites, which are the fastest growing social networks today. No site establishes women’s dominance in social media more than  Pinterest, where 33% of U.S. women online access Pinterest (for men it’s only 8%). Continue reading

News in Brief-Brooks Mania Grows As BBC Makes Unfortunate Error

bbc

NIB has been away swimming through Cork (you may have seen us on the news), hope no one was too distraught, anyway we’re back now, stop crying.

Seems while we were gone the Neknomination craze took off with dire consequences. The latest story following the Facebook phenomenon has seen an Irish girl in Australia swallow a goldfish in her “neknominated” pint. NIB hoped it was the classic carved carrot joke but sadly not. The girl, a trainee solicitor no less, from Newry has since received death threats and online abuse, to which she replied, celebs do it on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here (How did she get through the entry exams?) and, you know, she get’s it yeah? Writing on her Twitter “feel depressed.” To what extent can humans become more ridiculous? Continue reading

Bundle Research For TV, Broadband And Phone Deals Is Worth The Time It Takes

comp

We all know that the cheapest way to get broadband and subscription TV channels at home these days is in a bundle, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve bothered to do it yet. When you come home after a long day, the last thing you probably feel like doing is shopping around for a good deal on your TV or internet subscriptions.

But by not streamlining separate services for broadband, TV and phoneline, you could be paying double what you need to. Doing a little research to compare what each company has on offer won’t take more than a couple of hours – at the very most – and it could save you hundreds on an annual basis. Continue reading
