European Rugby – Munster And Ulster Bow Out

image

It’s bad, it really is. Munster and Ulster are out of contention in the European Rugby Champion’s Cup. For Munster this is the campaign that began with Ian Keatley channeling Ronan O’Gara and sealing the opening win with a sumptuous drop goal. For Ulster, it hasn’t looked too good all season but damn it hadn’t once looked this bad. Leinster and Connacht now carry the European hopes for Ireland as north and south must regroup.

2014 Rugby Year In Review – Spring Launches A New Era

The Ireland team celebrate winning the RBS 6 Nations Championship in the dressing room 15/3/2014Dual blogged on Irish News Review

We’ve been a little light on rugby coverage here – let me assure you it was due to an exceptionally hectic Christmas and nothing to do with a Leinster man avoiding writing negatively about the struggling province – but now comes that unmissable time of the year. A time for nostalgia and teary eyes reminiscence. Yes, it’s time for a lookback on the rugby year that was 2014, a long overdue positive one for Irish fans.

Summer Internationals – Lessons Learned, Work To Be Done

image

And so Ireland win a series on foreign soil. Before saying anything else, it must be noted that in recent memory we have only managed to do this over the US/Canada (09/13), Japan (05) and the Pacific Islands (03). Certainly Argentina are the most high profile side we have managed to beat on a series away from home, and therefore regardless what other outcomes there are from this summer, Ireland’s prolific win streak continues with two trophies in the bag for the season.

Schmidt Calls Upon Experience To Seal The Series

image

True to his word, Joe Schmidt has presented the potential for all 29 touring players in Argentina to get game time over this two game tour. While he may not have proven to be the ultra radical, anti predictable coach when it comes to selection, that’s still some bloody good work in 160 minutes. So who is in? Continue reading

Heineken Cup – Munster Finish Their Heineken Cup History On A Low

image

“Not with a bang, but a whimper”. The words of T.S Elliot may seem a somewhat harsh reflection on the weekend’s rugby, but for two teams like Munster and more significantly Clermont to bow out of the competition’s final ever incarnation in such fashion was deflating at best. Munster can take heart from the fact that they lost to the best and that they were at least extremely close to functioning fully, whereas Clermont will only be too happy to close the door on the competition that has caused them such mental anguish over the years, in the hope that the new Championship brings more prosperous times. Heineken Cup – The French Connection Continues

image

What is it with Irish teams versus the French? The English have Le Crunch, but with fixtures like Leinster VS Clermont in 2010 at the Aviva, again two years later in Bordeaux, Ulster VS Montpellier and Munster VS Perpignan this year, you’d have to say the Celtic and Gallic head to head has just created a huge buzz in recent years. Good news then that two of the three Irish provinces are of course taking on French opposition this weekend. Pure sporting nectar. Continue reading

Six Nations 2014 – More Blind Faith Or A Real Shot For Ireland?

Every year it’s always the same. Our year, things are different, did you see them in the November Series? Yet for the last four years Ireland have brought only one thing to the Six Nations, inconsistency. 2010, we were following up an unbeaten year and finished second, but from there it has been near torture for fans. Multiple implosions in 2011, a lack of force in 2012 and of course the near wooden spoon of 2013, it has been tough being an Irish rugby fan. So then is this faith in the Schmidt era based on solid thought, or is it simply that it just couldn’t get any worse? Continue reading
