Wrestlemania 29 Review

Before I get into reviewing the show proper, I would just like to acknowledge the great atmosphere I was lucky to be a part of whilst watching Wrestlemania this year. Showtime Cinema Limerick decided to put the event on in one of their big screens, allowing fans who usually have to watch the showcase of the immortals quietly in their living rooms to engage in a fantastic experience with those in attendance making it very clear who they liked and disliked and creating an atmosphere you thrive on as a wrestling fan. It had to be the funniest and most exciting viewing of Wrestlemania I have ever had and if Showtime decide to run again, and I don’t see why they would not as the place was a near sell-out in one of the biggest screens, I would definitely recommend anybody from the Limerick or surrounding counties to partake in what is guaranteed to be a memorable night.

The pre-show was exactly what you would expect, mainly just last-minute hype videos and skits in order to get last-minute fence sitters to purchase Wrestlemania. The featured match of the pre-show saw defending intercontinental champion Wade Barrett taking on The Miz. Many people were frustrated in the buildup to Mania when they discovered this match would not make the pay-per-view proper. Never the less the two had a fun albeit short match with the Wade bringing back his infamous wasteland move for the night. However it was Miz who would pick up the win and his second Intercontinental championship by locking in the figure four leg lock in a very unique fashion and making Barrett tap out. Naturally The Miz celebrated ecstatically however the whole pre-show seemed underwhelming and the match seemed to lack any real credibility or prestige. Continue reading

The Ballance Sheet #3 : Solid Crowd Ignites Top Performers

Hey, folks. I’m Gary Ballance, and this is my guide to the often weird, occasionally wonderful world of independent wrestling.

Last time, I went through a few of the factors that go into a successful show, and the various ways fate can intervene and mess them up. This next element deserves its own article: the crowd.

The crowd is the lifeblood of any successful show. For the promoter, a large crowd means tickets sold and costs covered. Large enough, and it could also mean the difference between breaking even and actually making a profit. Continue reading

Top 5 Hardcore Title matches

The Hardcore title is long gone from the WWE, but in it’s pomp during the Attitude Era, it was a constant source of entertainment and high quality matches. It really came into it’s own when Crash Holly brought in the 24/7 rule, meaning the title could be won anytime, anywhere. There have been some prestigious holders of the Hardcore title, including Mankind, The Undertaker and one of the Godfather’s Ho’s. Here are the top five Hardcore title matches:

Fallout From Elimination Chamber Opens The Road To Wrestlemania

Image

What a perfect time for me to write my very first wrestling review, as every year the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view and the subsequent episode of WWE Raw are amongst the most exciting for wrestling fans. It was this period five years ago that really reignited my passion for wrestling. Continue reading

WWE Parties Ready To Rumble

WWE Parties Ireland make a welcome return on Sunday November 18th for the annual Survivor Series card.

The event sees wrestling fanatics return to Captain America’s on Dublin’s Grafton Street for a third time under the WWE Parties Ireland banner, following successful showings of Wrestlemania and Summerslam this year.

Doors open at 9pm and their will be a whole host of activities to lead fans up to the main event at 1am. A Survivor Series themed table quiz is scheduled while fans will also get to choose classic Survivor Series matches that they want to watch. The quiz will be hosted by Luke and Duane, singers of “Just Take Care, Spike Your Hair”, the official theme of WWE superstar Zack Ryder’s “Z! True Long Island Story programme”.WWE music will be played on the night while there will also be WWE tshirt giveaways and more.

With the pay per view on the big screen, late food, a late bar and a friendly atmosphere it really is the ultimate experience for any wrestling fan and at €5 it certainly is a bargain. Tickets for the event can be bought here.

Survivor Series itself promises to be a classic and hoardes of fans gathering at the event will be hoping to see Irish superstar Sheamus regain his World Heavyweight Championship as he battles The Big Show, who took the title from his grasp at Hell In A Cell.

Elsewhere on the card Ryback will have another crack at taking the coveted WWE Title from CM Punk in a triple threat match which also features John Cena. The monster, a revelation since his WWE debut, was screwed out of the title by referee turned wannabe superstar Brad Maddox at Hell In A Cell.

In traditional Survivor Series style two teams of five will do battle but who will be the last man standing as Team Foley battle Team Ziggler? WWE legend Mick Foley recruited Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Daniel Bryan and Ryback to his team to face Team Punk, which has since been changed due to the latter’s participation in the WWE title bout. Ryback has also been dropped from Team Foley for the same reason and as of yet no replacement has been announced. Team Foley will battle with Ziggler, Wade Barrett, Alberto Del Rio, Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes.

Expect more matches to be revealed as the event draws closer.

At Irish News Review, we have two tickets to give away for the highly anticipated event courtesy of our friends at WWE Parties Ireland. To win the tickets simply be the fifth person to tweet us (@irishnewsreview) the correct answer to the following question.

Survivor Series is the second longest running WWE pay per view, true or false?
