Super Bowl XLIX: Superpowers Collide As Patriots Meet Seahawks

nfl

Super Bowl XLIX is finally upon us, with the Seattle Seahawks set to take on the New England Patriots on Sunday night in the University of Phoenix stadium.

In so many ways, this feels like a clash of the old masters against the new breed, but Seattle are the reigning Super Bowl champions, so they cannot be dismissed lightly. Vegas has made them favourites for this game, and given how few Super Bowl champions have even made it back to the playoffs the following season, the phenomenal effort put in by the Seahawks needs to be acknowledged. This is no ordinary team, and considering they have tied their best players down to long term contracts, we could well be seeing them at this time of year for the foreseeable future. Seahawks Thump Broncos To Claim First Super Bowl

seattle

There are a number of simplistic clichés that could be trotted out in an attempt to rationalize the result of Super Bowls. “Defense wins championships” is the most common one that comes to mind, and one that has been uttered many times in the hours after this game. But it is too simplistic a way to try and explain the result of any championship decider, as great as the all-encompassing mantra seems. In the case of Super Bowl XLVIII, it doesn’t even begin to tell the story.

It all started to go wrong for Denver at the coin toss. As Joe Namath and his extraordinarily lavish coat flipped the coin and the Seahawks correctly guessed tails, they decided to defer receiving the ball until the second half, which is the current thinking in NFL circles. Yet when Seattle registered the opening score of the game on the very first play, it was through no great effort of their own. As center Manny Ramirez geared up to snap the ball, Peyton Manning approached the line to change the play call, while the nervous energy flowed through his center. He flung the ball high, which would have been awkward for Manning to take had he been expecting it. Given that he wasn’t, he had no chance with it. The Broncos defenders rushed back to the end zone, covering the ball and giving up a safety. They were fortunate it wasn’t a touchdown. Continue reading

NFL Playoffs: Divisional Round

nfl

Last weekend saw the elimination of the Packers, Bengals, Chiefs and Eagles from the race to the Super Bowl. It did go to show that the suggested changes to the playoff system in future years would be absurd, as it brought about two good games, one great one and one frankly absurd comeback win. Twelve top teams getting the chance to compete for the Super Bowl seems like the right fit, and it would be a shame to see the level of post-season games be diluted in years to come. Whether that matters if more money could be made with changes is an entirely different matter.

This weekend sees the winners of last weekend (Colts, Saints, Chargers and Forty-Niners) progress to the next round, where their reward is to play against the top two sides from their respective conferences. Scant reward, a game against one of the Broncos, Patriots, Seahawks or Panthers, who will be coming off of a week’s rest. But everyone left standing is in with a shot of going to New York for Super Bowl XLVIII. Here, we review the games taking place this weekend, which will set up the conference deciders.
