Pats Snap Up Kavanagh

St Patrick’s Athletic have completed the signing of former Waterford United player Daryl Kavanagh.

Manager Pete Mahon was delighted to be able to include young midfielder in his Saints squad ahead of the 2011 season, “he’s a player I would have known about for some time but he would have come to prominence recently with the PFAI team that went to Norway”.

Mahon added, “we’ve gone to a lot of effort to sign him but I feel he is the kind of player that will definitely enhance our squad, he’s still only 24 but he’s already had 5 or 6 years’ experience in the league and he can play either up front or out wide on the right”.

Pats beat off stiff competition to land the former Blues ace who was interesting numerous sides both at home and abroad.

PFAI Squad Finish Third

Liam Kelly`s PFAI squad finished third in a FIFPro Tournament today in Norway as they battled to earn contracts with professional clubs in Europe.

Norway, Sweden and Finland were the other countries taking part in the competition.

Ireland bowed out in the semi finals after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Finland, with Sean Kelly grabbing the only Irish goal from the penalty spot.

Ireland sealed third spot with a one nil win over Sweden when ex St Patricks Athletic and Shamrock Rovers striker Mark Leech found the net.

The players were hoping to impress scouts and managers that were attending the event in Oslo and it remains to be seen if any have done enough to win deals with clubs. Brian Shelley, the man at the centre of the Bohemians controversy starred for the Irish side at right back with other notable performers including Eamon Zayed and Stuart Byrne. Shelley has been touted for a move to Australia while Zayed appears set for a move to his grandfather`s homeland of Libya

Williams On Trial At Celtic

Sporting Fingal star Shaun Williams is currently on trial with Scottish giants Celtic, as he seeks to sort out his future.

The 24 year old had widely impressed scouts from the Glasgow club during the 2010 Airtricity League season and manager Neil Lennon was keen to invite the versatile midfielder over. The Celtic manager is currently running the rule over Williams at Lennoxtown, ahead of the Hoops weekend clash with Hibernian.

Williams, has also had interest from England, with Coventry City and Crystal Palace both keeping tabs on the 2010 PFAI young player of the year. Shamrock Rovers have also been keeping an eye on his availability. He was due to fly out to Norway with the rest of the PFAI squad this week but the offer of earning a contract with his boyhood club was too good to refuse.

Should the Portmarnock native earn a deal with the SPL side he will join former League of Ireland stars Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn at Parkhead. McCourt made the move to Parkhead in 2008 from Derry City while fellow Northern Ireland international McGinn followed suit a year later.
