Super Bowl XLIX: Superpowers Collide As Patriots Meet Seahawks

nfl

Super Bowl XLIX is finally upon us, with the Seattle Seahawks set to take on the New England Patriots on Sunday night in the University of Phoenix stadium.

In so many ways, this feels like a clash of the old masters against the new breed, but Seattle are the reigning Super Bowl champions, so they cannot be dismissed lightly. Vegas has made them favourites for this game, and given how few Super Bowl champions have even made it back to the playoffs the following season, the phenomenal effort put in by the Seahawks needs to be acknowledged. This is no ordinary team, and considering they have tied their best players down to long term contracts, we could well be seeing them at this time of year for the foreseeable future. NFL: Seahawks And Steelers Gaining Momentum

football

We have nought but three weeks left in the regular season, following the tumultuous end to week fourteen. Many teams suffered heartbreaking losses that put the playoffs beyond them, while several teams shot themselves in the foot when it mattered most. With so much still to play for in the last three weeks, we’ll analyse where those in the hunt went right and wrong with our recap of all the best week fourteen action from the NFL.

Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles (24-14)

Another strong showing from the previously ailing Seattle Seahawks. The Super Bowl champs are now in the middle of a three game winning streak, getting hot at just the right time. The defense is playing lights out football, and they really shut down this high tempo offense, with Mark Sanchez finishing with less than one hundred yards passing, and only getting the ball to four receivers. They pressed hard at the line of scrimmage, and gave no separation to Jeremy Maclin and company. One of the touchdowns they gave up was the result of a short field off a muffed punt, so this could easily have been a bigger score. Russell Wilson is orchestrating the offense magnificently, and beat the defense through the air when they went all out to shut down Marshawn Lynch. Nobody wants to play Seattle right now. NFL: Crunch Time Across The Board

football

Things change quickly in the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals, for example, are now ensconced in a losing streak and are fighting for their lives in the divisional race, just two weeks after having the best record of any NFL team. With just four games left to decide who’s in and who’s out in the playoff race, as well as who’s in and who’s out of the race for the no.1 overall draft pick in 2015, there is a lot left to play for- including job security for the majority of people. Let’s look ahead to week fourteen of the NFL regular season.

Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles scored a huge divisional win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving to get some breathing room atop the NFC East. They did it by exposing an overmatched defense, wearing them down with furious and frenetic offensive series’. The Eagles defense showed up pretty well too and, with the number of chances their fast play gives the opposition, that will need to remain the case down the stretch. The Eagles three losses have all been against strong teams on the road, but they are facing one of the form teams in the NFL right now, and will need to be on top form to score another big win. Can Jeremy Maclin make big plays on the Legion of Boom? Can LeSean McCoy keep up his resurgent running? Can Mark Sanchez stop fumbling the ball? They need all three of those to be answered with a yes on Sunday. The fast pace won’t scare this team, like it spooked the Cowboys. Continue reading

NFL: Packers Rule The Roost

football

Week thirteen of the NFL season is now in the books, and what a week it was. Thanksgiving week can sometimes disappoint, particularly as the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys have struggled in recent times, but this year we got three cracking games to be thankful for. We also had a full slate of action on Sunday, due to the end of the bye weeks. With so much action to look back on, let’s get straight to our review. Continue reading

NFL: Thanksgiving Football Extravaganza

football

Happy Thanksgiving! This week’s NFL preview comes to you a couple of days early, because week thirteen features the traditional Thanksgiving Football Extravaganza! Three huge NFC contests take place on Thursday, with two of them early enough to watch live in Irish time. This is one of the most tightly contested NFL seasons, both in terms of teams chasing divisional crowns and wild card spots. It seems certain that a few teams with good winning records will miss the post-season, making these final few encounters all the more vital. Let’s look ahead to the action. Continue reading

NFL: Patriots And Cardinals Take Giant Leap Forward

football

Week eleven of the NFL season and its tumultuous twists and turns are now a matter of record in the schedules. The big shocks keep on coming, although perhaps we should have known that the giant slayers known as the St Louis Rams would serve Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos a severe blow in the seeding race. There were plenty of decisive victories that gave some top teams a little breathing room, and exposed others as pretenders to the crown. With so much wild action to look back on, we’ll start our review of the week here.

New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts (42-20)

A comprehensive win for the New England Patriots, who stormed into Lucas Oil Stadium and stomped all over the Indianapolis Colts. Jonas Gray put his hand forward as another offensive difference-maker for the Pats, running in a whopping four touchdowns to put the game away relatively early. The Patriots offensive line has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks, and they were a formidable presence here, dominating the trenches.  Tom Brady was a little off-kilter, tossing two picks, but that New England could record a blowout win away to a top AFC rival with the veteran quarterback having a bad day is probably the scariest part of this win. The Patriots are in a fantastic position to secure home field advantage for the playoffs now. Continue reading

NFL: Playoff Race Heats Up

The NFL slate of fixtures is getting more and more impressive every week. As we head into week eleven of the regular season, opportunities for wins over rivals are getting more and more precious, with a victory over either a divisional or conference challenger a serious blow to their hopes of overtaking you. With seemingly every team in and around .500 still in with a serious shot of making the post-season, there are plenty of battles between contenders ahead. This weekend sees five contests between sides with winning records. There is some great football coming up, so lets preview it here. Continue reading
