News In Brief – Irish Champion Slams Innocent Roma

Rob Heffernan, the gold medal winning walker from Cork may walk the walk, but he doesn’t tweet the tweet. A recent slip on the social networking site has taken the shine off his World Athletics Championship medal after, in reply to the case of Gardai removing two children from their Roma families on suspicion of abduction, he tweeted: “Unbelievably dirty scumbags. They should be shipped out”. Uh oh. Of course the Roma children were living with their biological parents and Heffernan apologised.

Further proof paying the property tax was a bad idea: their coming after you for next year’s cash this year. If you succumbed to political pressure and threats of fines (that NIB hasn’t heard to materialise) you’ll now pay for it again as the government wants its wages in advance. Lessons Must Be Learned From Roma Children Debacle

Sinn Féin Justice and Equality Spokesperson, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has said that lessons must be learned from the debacle over recent days that led to two Roma children being removed from their families.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:

Independent Review Sought Following Irish Roma Scandal

Loredana and Iancu, parents of Iancu Junior (2) and his sister. Two gardai called to their home on Tuesday and asked the boy’s father to come with them.

Pavee Point have called on Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald TD to establish an independent review of the actions of state authorities in respect of the removal of Roma children from their families in recent days.

Gardai took two Roma children from their families in Dublin and Westmeath this week in light of the case of Maria , a blonde haired blue eyed child who was found living in a Roma camp in central Greece with a couple who are not her biological parents. That couple have since been charged with abduction.

Pavee Point has said it is disturbed that there have been two recent cases of young Roma children being removed from their families as a matter of first resort and not as a matter of last resort that would normally be the case in all but the most extreme child protection cases. Continue reading

DNA Test To Establish Identity Of Mystery Roma Child

DNA tests are to be carried out today to establish the identity of a seven-year-old blond girl who was taken from a Roma couple in Dublin.

It is a case very similar to that of Maria, a little girl found in a Roma camp in Greece with a couple who aren’t her parents.

Gardai were called to a house in Tallaght on Monday afternoon following a tip off and removed the girl. The couple, who claim to be the girl’s parents say she belongs to them and was born in 2006. Continue reading
