Sligo Sign Danish Striker Nielsen

Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of Danish striker Morten Nielsen from German club FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt.

The 24 year old began his career at FC Copenhagen before being signed by Chelsea at the age of 16.

Nielsen spent three years at Stamford Bridge in their youth academy. While there Nielsen played in the Chelsea team which made it to the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2008 against Man City.  Continue reading

Jimmy Ellis : The Forgotten Champ

When people think of a former World Heavyweight Champion they think of the greats like Muhammad Ali , Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Max Schmeling and the list goes on. One name you won’t hear though is that of Jimmy Ellis.

Ellis , a native of Louisville,  Kentucky, started boxing as an amateur after watching a friend box the one and only Muhammad Ali on a televised amateur show called “Tomorrow’s Champions”. After watching his friend ( Donnie Hall) lose, Jimmy Ellis thought he had what it took to be a fighter. He followed his friend to Louisville’s Columbia Boxing Gym where he started his amateur career under the coaching of a police officer called Joe Martin. Ellis was no doubt a talent, notching up a very impressive amateur record winning 59 of his 66 fights. He fought Ali twice as an amateur, losing the first and winning the second. He was a Golden Gloves Champion and no doubt was a big prospect as he turned pro in 1961. Continue reading

The Globalisation Of The NBA

Brooklyn Nets kicked off the first global game of 2014 with a resounding 127-110 win over the Atlanta Hawks at London’s 02 Arena last Thursday.

Over the past 35 years the NBA have played 147 games globally, visiting 20 different countries including China, Germany, Italy and Russia amongst others.

The League of Ireland season is rarely boring and un-entertaining, 2013 was no different. We experienced many highs and lows with St.Patrick’s Athletic and Athlone Town among the most memorable stories as they won their respective leagues.

As ever there was no shortage of controversy as Waterford United endured a flirtation with the financial abyss as former manager Stephen Henderson sought to have them wound up in court before both parties ultimately made an agreement. The club also faced some lows on the pitch as they narrowly missed out on a play-off position in the First Division. Continue reading
