News in Brief – Irish Spring Break Is Upon Us

Enda-Kenny

A man has been handed down a suspended sentence after telling Gardai to “shut the f*** up”. The man, who has previous convictions and is a recovering heroin addict apparently, became enraged when his partner didn’t win a community award: Tallaght Person of the Year. After a public row he snatched her handbag and stalked off only to be picked up by Gardai. Sure we’d all be raging if we didn’t win Tallaght Person of the Year.

He should give auld Enda a call. The Taoiseach is in Washington singing the Wild Rover with Mr O’Mahoneybama and has told a press conference if people have a problem with the way he’s doing things they can give him a ring. His number is public after all. This has given NIB an idea. Continue reading

Basketball : National Cup Finals Fail To Disappoint

basketball1_large

Friday night saw one of the greatest if not the greatest Womens Cup final of all time as UL Huskies were defeated in overtime by Team Montenotte Hotel Cork. A sold out crowd at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght saw defending champions UL defeated as Irish coach James Weldon squared off against another Irish coach in Paul Kelleher. UL were chasing their third straight National Cup but it wasn’t to be although the girls from Limerick have to be praised for their spirited fight back having looked dead and buried at half time in this one.

The Men’s final was never going to outplay the Women’s fixture as UCC Demons comfortably got the better of shock cup finalists Dublin Inter. Inter , who are made up mainly of Lithuanian players , shot well from behind the three point line but after keeping in touch with their Cork counterparts for much of the first quarter they fell away as the game progressed. The game marked a fantastic achievement from Demons captain Shane Coughlin as he collected his fifth National Cup winners medal. Continue reading

Violent Start To 2014 As Seven Murdered So Far

police

Over the past few days we have been discovering the gruesome details of the murder of Thomas O’Gorman. The 39 year old researcher was killed after an argument involving a game of chess. According to reports one of his lungs was removed and has not been located. Saverio Bellante, the man charged with Mr O’Gorman’s murder, told Gardai at the scene that he had eaten the victim’s heart but it seems likely now that Bellante actually consumed the man’s lung.

This grotesque incident has been heralded as the worst witnessed by Gardaí and crime scene investigators in some time. While this case is particularly shocking and unveils the frightening extremes of suffering one person can inflict on another, it is actually just one of seven violent deaths that have taken place in Ireland since the New Year. News in Brief – Ireland Falls To A New Kind Of Criminal

lauren

Enda’s been away on a mission before the taste of Turkey has barely left our lips. Good old Enda, what would we do without him? Well, actually while he’s been away the Limerick City of Culture Committee has crumbled further. CEO Patricia Ryan has now resigned from her 18 month, €120,000 salary job. NIB said didn’t we?! We said last week it was going to get silly and it has.

Not only has Ryan been resigned to giving up the job (and its accompanying cash) now there are allegations of phone hacking as someone let slip of her departure on a blog an hour before she made an official statement. It’s hardly whistleblowing on an Edward Snowden scale. Talking to RTE Radio 1 an artist involved described the whole thing as ‘like a big game’ before painstakingly going through each play; ‘the players have come out on the pitch . . . there’s been an upset . . . the whistle goes’ yeah we get the idea. It’s a game, Monopoly, the Limerick version. Continue reading

A Year in Brief: Part One

muff

What a year it’s been; Hitler birthday cakes, mutant rats, and Bob Geldof off to space! To celebrate the end of another 365 days here are some of NIB’s favourite stories of the year.

Kicking off the year in festive spirit a man in Derry was fined after stealing a CCTV camera which “became his friend”. Police found Peter Morrison, 24, drunk and “petting” the camera as they arrived to arrest him. CCTV pets are for life not just for Christmas. Continue reading
