Wrestlemania 30: End Of One Era, Beginning Of Another

taker

Wrestlemania 30 turned out to be quite an extravaganza, with spectacular colours and personalities right from the off, along with a number of entertaining cameos from old faces, as well as a number of genuine shocks in matches throughout the night, which was sure to have been a big success for the WWE.

The night kicked off with a few words from the event’s host, Hulk Hogan. Hogan made his way down to the ring with his classic entrance music, and the place went wild. As he got talking about the history of the event, he was interrupted by some striking entrance music; that of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Stone Cold made his way down to the ring to stir up the crowd a bit, and he whipped them into a frenzy at the prospect of him kicking Hogan’s ass. That didn’t materialise, however, as he said he had too much respect for what Hogan had done for the business. Shortly after this, he was interrupted himself, as The Rock made his way down to the ring. The crowd roared, as three of the all-time fan favourites occupied the ring at the same time and, although there was some notable mic rustiness from the three, they got great cheers as they rattled through their catchphrases and downed some beers.

The first match of the night saw Triple H taking on Daniel Bryan, with the winner going on to take part in the World Heavyweight Title triple threat main event match. Triple H came down to the ring on a huge throne, with a tremendous golden crown, as well as armour, adorned upon him. Bryan had come down with his shoulder heavily strapped, having re-injured it during his attack on Triple H on Raw, but he brought the fight to his opponent early. He landed a barrage of kicks on The Game, before the Cerebral Assassin’s size and power advantage took over. Triple H landed a number of heavy blows on the leader of the yes movement, working hard on the injured shoulder. He put Bryan in a number of crossface-style submission holds, to inflict maximum damage. But Bryan would not go down or tap out, and he kept fighting back hard. Triple H landed a couple of Pedigrees, but couldn’t keep Bryan down for a three count. Bryan had to land a couple of running knees himself before actually pulling off the victory, but it did not end there. Stephanie McMahon, who had been at ringside throughout, slapped Bryan several times after the match, before Triple H attacked him from behind, and hit his injured shoulder with a steel chair, raising doubts about his ability to compete in the main event.

sheamus2k Sports have announced the entire roster for the upcoming WWE 2K14 game.

The list tops off WWE 2K14’s previously revealed roster for 30 Years of WrestleMania — a mode that allows players to relive famous matches from yesteryear. 2K Sports recently revealed all five eras in the mode, which span from “Hulkamania Runs Wild” to the “Universe Era.”

The roster reveal has thrown up some surprises with the omission of Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel, Rob Van Dam , Fandango, The Uso Brothers, The Wyatt Family and Big E Langston. All are likely to feature as Downloadable Content (DLC) in the near future. Antonio Cesaro and Ryback take their bow on the full roster having served as DLC in WWE 13.

The Ballance Sheet #5 : Grappling In The Granite City

bbLast Saturday, I had the privilege of being part of a terrific show in Aberdeen, Scotland, and wrestling in front of the biggest crowd I’ve ever worked in front of; an astounding 1,103 people packed out the Beach Ballroom, and were loud and lively all evening long, celebrating the fifth anniversary of Wrestlezone.

I’ve done shows in front of big audiences before, but this one felt that little bit more special. Knowing the Wrestlezone crew as I have for the past four years- and the hard work they put into growing their promotion- I was delighted to witness the fruits of their labour for myself, up close and personal, and the phenomenal success of their big night.  Continue reading

Wrestlemania 29 Review

Before I get into reviewing the show proper, I would just like to acknowledge the great atmosphere I was lucky to be a part of whilst watching Wrestlemania this year. Showtime Cinema Limerick decided to put the event on in one of their big screens, allowing fans who usually have to watch the showcase of the immortals quietly in their living rooms to engage in a fantastic experience with those in attendance making it very clear who they liked and disliked and creating an atmosphere you thrive on as a wrestling fan. It had to be the funniest and most exciting viewing of Wrestlemania I have ever had and if Showtime decide to run again, and I don’t see why they would not as the place was a near sell-out in one of the biggest screens, I would definitely recommend anybody from the Limerick or surrounding counties to partake in what is guaranteed to be a memorable night.

The pre-show was exactly what you would expect, mainly just last-minute hype videos and skits in order to get last-minute fence sitters to purchase Wrestlemania. The featured match of the pre-show saw defending intercontinental champion Wade Barrett taking on The Miz. Many people were frustrated in the buildup to Mania when they discovered this match would not make the pay-per-view proper. Never the less the two had a fun albeit short match with the Wade bringing back his infamous wasteland move for the night. However it was Miz who would pick up the win and his second Intercontinental championship by locking in the figure four leg lock in a very unique fashion and making Barrett tap out. Naturally The Miz celebrated ecstatically however the whole pre-show seemed underwhelming and the match seemed to lack any real credibility or prestige. Continue reading

House Of Pain : For The Love, Not The Money

The majority of wrestling fans think that wrestlers live in the lap of luxury but unless you’re The Rock, CM Punk or John Cena it couldn’t be any further from the truth.

That’s just on the indy scene in the States and Europe, never mind here in Ireland. See if you’re a wrestler on the Irish scene and you want to make money then you may forget about it because there is no money to be made here. You might get some money to cover your expenses like travel accommodation etc but other than that there isn’t a profit to be made at all. Most guys have day jobs which help with their expenses and some guys drive which helps as well if the promoter covers the petrol cost for the driver.  But because I’m unemployed at the moment it’s even harder for me and most times I just barely cover my costs.

The point I’m trying to make is next time you go to an Irish wrestling event show your appreciation and support Irish Wrestling instead of spending your money on WWE tickets because the amount of talent in this country is unreal, prime example is the recent WWE signings of Joey Cabray and Rachel Walker.

As I said next time you’re at any Irish Wrestling event come over to the lads and ladies and show your appreciation and say thank you because I know personally that it means a lot.

Anyway that’s it for now so until next time take it ham and cheesy 🙂

Fallout From Elimination Chamber Opens The Road To Wrestlemania

Image

What a perfect time for me to write my very first wrestling review, as every year the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view and the subsequent episode of WWE Raw are amongst the most exciting for wrestling fans. It was this period five years ago that really reignited my passion for wrestling. Continue reading
