Cork City –v- St Patrick’s Athletic    7:45

Two title challengers face off here as Cork City host St Patrick’s Athletic at Turner’s Cross.

After the 2-1 defeat to Dundalk last week Cork City are in desperate need of a win in order to close the six point gap that has opened up at the top. Cork face very tough opposition here and will need a big improvement on last week if they wish to win the game. If they lose they will drop into third and may be as many as nine points behind.

A solitary Chris Forrester goal gave St Patrick’s Athletic a 1-0 win over Sligo Rovers last week. That victory has allows them a chance to claim second place if they achieve a win here. To win in Cork will be a tough task but one Liam Buckley will feel his side are capable of achieving. Lose and a second league title may just slip from their grasp.

Bray Wanderers –v- Athlone Town    7:45

Two struggling sides face off as Bray Wanderers play Athlone Town at the Carlisle Grounds.

Another week, another defeat for Bray Wanderers. Their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Dundalk last week was their twelfth this season. More worrying is the manner of the defeat as Bray have conceded 13 goals in their last three games. Alan Matthews and his side need a win and quickly and will see this game as a perfect opportunity to get it.

The 2-0 defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic was Athlone Towns 16th this season. That defeat has left them rooted to the bottom of table and six points from safety. If Athlone are to have any chance of surviving they need to start beating the teams around them, so taking all three points here is an absolute must. Continue reading

Bray Wanderers –v- Shamrock Rovers    7:45

Relegation battling Bray Wanderers play title chasing Shamrock Rovers at the Carlisle Grounds.

A 5-0 defeat against Derry City last week has seen Bray Wanderers dropping into the relegation zone. The Wicklow side will now look to move up the table as quickly as possible. They face a tough task here against a side with serious title aspirations, but manager Alan Matthews and his side will hope their home advantage will be enough to get the result they need. Athlone Town –v- Drogheda United    7:45

Two out of form teams face off as Athlone Town play Drogheda United at the Athlone Town Stadium.

Despite seeing an upswing in form that got them four points Athlone Town suffered a setback in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cork City on May 30th. Athlone will see this as a chance to get some more points on the board. A home game, against a woefully out of form side who are leaking goals. Athlone will be bitterly disappointed if they don’t get at least a draw.

The 6-0 hammering against St Patrick’s Athletic was another defeat for Drogheda United, their fourth in a row. In those four games they have conceded 19 goals. Drogheda need a win and badly. They have a good chance here against and equally out of form side, but if the Louth side cannot sort their defence out they will not get the three points they need. Continue reading

Cork City –v- Derry City 7:45

Title chasing Cork City host Derry City at Turner’s Cross.

The 3-2 defeat at the hands of St Patrick’s Athletic last week was a big disappointment for Cork City. By no means out of the title race, Cork are now chasing rather than leading. With six points dropped in their last two games and against title rivals, Cork will need a win here to gain back some of the momentum they lost. Lose and they many find themselves slipping down the table.

After the abrupt departure of Roddy Collins this week, Derry City were quick to replace him with club legend Peter Hutton. Hutton will be hoping that the renewed enthusiasm around the club will translate to results on the pitch. Derry face difficult opposition and will need every advantage they can get to attain the win they need.

Bohemians –v- UCD    7:45

Two relegation threatened teams face off here as Bohemians welcome UCD to Dalymount Park.

A 1-1 draw with Derry City last week has left Bohemians sitting in ninth position, but still threatened by relegation. Manager Owen Heary and his side are well aware that there is a long way to go in this league and that the best way to avoid the drop is to beat the teams around them. They face such a team here and will be looking for nothing but a win.

Goals from Robbie Benson and Cillian Morrison gave UCD a much needed three points in a 2-1 win over Drogheda United last week. Despite that win, UCD are still stuck in the relegation zone and manager Aaron Callaghan and his players will be determined to get a run of positive results that will lift them to safety, and for that they need all three points here.
