The Goggle Box – Saul Slows Down As The Walking Dead Goes Gruesome

Better Call Saul S01E07 – “Bingo”

It can’t be said that BCS has stuttered with this week’s seventh episode but it is more than accurate to say that this was the quiet beginnings of the path to Saul. Jimmy was so close, ready to move out of the salon and into a swanky office of his own, which he was hoping wouldn’t hurt his chances with Kim too of course. This is likely the last time we will see Jimmy get this close to real, legit success and it was handled in a surprisingly tragic manner. With Jimmy’s quiet moment in the final scene of the episode we saw a similar “lowest ebb” from him as we did from Mike last week. With both characters reaching their lowest, may we get nothing but climbs from now on? Climbs that find them both settle comfortably in the middle tier of course.

The Goggle Box – House Of Cards Splits The Deck

image

House Of Cards Season 3 has been and gone and opinions are divided at best. Was the third season of a binge watch TV series ever going to go down a treat? Probably not. Are we all fools to have plowed through all 13 episodes in no time at all? Probably, yes. But the burning question, was it any good? Yes; and here’s why.

Lads, seriously, full spoilers for House Of Cards follow.

NFL Week 3: Big Wins For Seattle And Arizona

Reigning Superbowl Champions Seattle Seahawks in action

Reigning Superbowl Champions Seattle Seahawks in action

Week three of the NFL season saw plenty of points being put on the board, with several shoot-outs matched by a few crushing blowouts. The regular season is in full flow now, and week three saw some teams make serious declarations of their intent. Let’s review the action here:

Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks (20-26)

The Seattle Seahawks win another regular season game at home, but they don’t often do it by surrendering a two-touchdown lead. Overall, the ‘hawks defense dominated Peyton Manning, giving him no time or room to do anything for the first three quarters, but then were hit three times on essentially the same play at the end, forcing overtime. The offense went away from the three-headed beast running game of weeks one and two, with Percy Harvin not getting a rushing attempt all day. Yet when they received the ball in overtime, Harvin was used very successfully as a decoy. It’s a neat variation on the read-option, and a very useful trick for Seattle to pull out, with Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson likely to profit from those plays. In the end, Seattle got it done when the game was on the line. If they get home-field advantage in the play-offs, they’ll go to the Super Bowl. Continue reading

NFL: Football Returns As Packers Seek To Topple Seahawks

football

It’s back. That other kind of football. The American one, where they throw the ball, wear all those big pads and make tackles with the velocity of lorries in fourth gear. The NFL never really goes away, because the draft has developed into a huge event with build-up starting the morning after the Super Bowl, and then pre-season training starts months in advance of the regular season. It is remarkable how the NFL has managed to be a year-round sport even though they only play for four months of the year. Maybe that’s why it is such a relief to have regular competition back now.

Thursday night will see the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, kick the year off with a home game against the Green Bay Packers. No team has won successive Super Bowl’s since the Patriots in 2004/05, but the Seahawks were clearly the dominant side in the NFL last season. Although they have lost some talented guys, they look well positioned to reign once more. Continue reading

News in Brief – Irish Spring Break Is Upon Us

Enda-Kenny

A man has been handed down a suspended sentence after telling Gardai to “shut the f*** up”. The man, who has previous convictions and is a recovering heroin addict apparently, became enraged when his partner didn’t win a community award: Tallaght Person of the Year. After a public row he snatched her handbag and stalked off only to be picked up by Gardai. Sure we’d all be raging if we didn’t win Tallaght Person of the Year.

He should give auld Enda a call. The Taoiseach is in Washington singing the Wild Rover with Mr O’Mahoneybama and has told a press conference if people have a problem with the way he’s doing things they can give him a ring. His number is public after all. This has given NIB an idea. Continue reading

Seahawks Thump Broncos To Claim First Super Bowl

seattle

There are a number of simplistic clichés that could be trotted out in an attempt to rationalize the result of Super Bowls. “Defense wins championships” is the most common one that comes to mind, and one that has been uttered many times in the hours after this game. But it is too simplistic a way to try and explain the result of any championship decider, as great as the all-encompassing mantra seems. In the case of Super Bowl XLVIII, it doesn’t even begin to tell the story.

It all started to go wrong for Denver at the coin toss. As Joe Namath and his extraordinarily lavish coat flipped the coin and the Seahawks correctly guessed tails, they decided to defer receiving the ball until the second half, which is the current thinking in NFL circles. Yet when Seattle registered the opening score of the game on the very first play, it was through no great effort of their own. As center Manny Ramirez geared up to snap the ball, Peyton Manning approached the line to change the play call, while the nervous energy flowed through his center. He flung the ball high, which would have been awkward for Manning to take had he been expecting it. Given that he wasn’t, he had no chance with it. The Broncos defenders rushed back to the end zone, covering the ball and giving up a safety. They were fortunate it wasn’t a touchdown. Continue reading

NFL: Seahawks And Broncos Battle For Super Bowl XLVIII Success

nfl

Welcome to the greatest sporting spectacle on Earth. The Super Bowl is the annual main event of the NFL, a glitzy and glamorous affair with huge hype, much analysis and a farcically long half-time show (this year featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers). At some point, a game will also break out. And this one should be a cracking encounter, with Peyton Manning bringing his outstanding Denver Broncos offense to meet the Seattle Seahawks and their top ranked defence. Here, we look ahead to the game and preview some of the factors that could decide the game.

Denver Broncos versus Seattle Seahawks (kick-off Sunday, 23:30)

The bookies have had a tough time trying to decide who the actual favourite is for this game, which sounds about right as both teams are very strong in their own right. While Denver have blown away many opponents as Peyton Manning has broken all sorts of passing records during the season, Seattle arrives with a power house of a defense that is capable of matching up with and taking on the Broncos strong receiver corps, with their own tough-talking gang of defensive backs known as the “Legion of Boom”. This is the clash where both teams strengths will meet, and if either side can gain an advantage in this area it would make it a very tough game for the other to win. Continue reading
