European Rugby – Leinster Face A Tough Run To The Final

Dual blogged on I’m Talkin’ Here

When the European Rugby Champion’s Cup was announced the cries from this side of the pond were that the new structure was essentially designed to stop the Irish teams from winning all the time. Whilst not exactly true, this Round 6 weekend and the subsequent knock out lay out has shown exactly what is different about this new structure. The goal was to make the competition more competitive, and no team is seeing this more so than Leinster. In previous years a home quarter final was all but a guarantee of progression to the semi finals. This was down to the void that often existed between the top 4 and bottom 4 teams. However, with four less teams and therefore more competitive pools you would have to say that nobody, bar Toulon, has anything resembling an easy route through the quarter finals. And of course the draw for the semi finals can be cruel as always with Leinster likely facing down a Toulon in France engagement should they get past a resurgent Bath. Simple.

European Rugby – Leinster Look To Lead

One round left and relatively little change from Matt O’Connor. When your team has demolished Castres a week previous, why tinker with the formula I suppose. It really is a funny old competition the Heineken Cup. A few months back, Ulster and Harlequins were shoe ins as the top four teams in the tournament, Ulster unbeaten, Quins as good as. O'Connell will be instrumental for Munster

Yes how the cards have fallen indeed, it looks like this weekend the majority of the Irish players involved in the Six Nations will face off against their English counterparts as Leinster, Ulster and Munster take on Wasps, Saracens and Harlequins. All three of those provinces haven’t exactly had the handiest time of it post-Six Nations. Ulster took a nasty hit from Edinburgh in Ravenhill whilst Munster were flattered by Connacht and Leinster left it till the death to snatch a victory from Glasgow. The following round saw fortunes flip, Ulster snagging their first win in Dublin in over a decade against Leinster whilst Munster were majorly humbled by Glasgow. Yet it is the two losing teams from this round that stand the best chance for this weekend.

Leinster Bow Out At The Hands Of Electric Munster

Heinekin-CupSlim but doable, points and tries left behind, what could have been. All of these thoughts now race through the minds of Leinster fans, but were it not for a fantastic display from Munster how things could have been the opposite way around. All in all it’s done now, Leinster have slipped into the Amlin Challenge Cup where they are sure to cause havoc and Munster have progressed as second runners up. It was a thrilling weekend of rugby and there’s a lot to discuss! Continue reading
