GAA: Donegal And Dublin Advance To Semi Final Date

All Ireland Football Quarter Finals

Donegal 1-12 Armagh 1-11

A late point from Paddy McBrearty fired 2012 All-Ireland champions Donegal into an All Ireland semi final against Dublin as they overcame Ulster rivals Armagh at Croke Park.

The first half started rather slowly and Armagh soon began to impose themselves on the opposition as they started adding points from Tony Kernan, Aaron Kernan and Aidan Forker. This game was a lot more open than most other Ulster matches. Armagh seemed to be in control of this game and they were playing much better football however all their good work was undone when Donegal’s Odhran McNiallais found the back of the net with the help of the post. This goal was completely against the run of play and it helped keep Donegal in touch approaching half time. GAA: Donegal Battle Armagh As Mons Braced For Capital Punishment

Six into four simply does not go. With Kerry and Mayo having sealed their passage to the last four of the All Ireland last weekend all eyes will switch focus to headquarters again this weekend to see who will join them. Reigning champions Dublin and Donegal have been branded as favourites ahead of the action but nothing is for certain at this stage of the competition. Could a team of yesteryear be set to reclaim glory or are they only beginning on the path to future success.

Here’s our verdict.

All Ireland Football Quarter Finals

Donegal v Armagh

This will be one of the more interesting games this weekend, as Armagh have been fairly consistent so far this year. They are most certainly a strong contender for future seasons.  This Armagh side play a very fast type of game and they rely heavily on their dynamic duo of Jamie Clarke and Tony Kernan. They have shown a natural ability to defend especially in the way they got past Meath in the last game. Armagh during that game had the opportunity to press ahead and put the game beyond Meath, but they failed to do so. GAA: Mayo Hold Off Cork As Monaghan Scrape Past Lilywhites

All-Ireland Quarter Finals

Mayo 1-19 Cork 2-15

Mayo held off a resilient Cork side to secure a semi final date with Kerry following a narrow one point win at Croke Park.

The first half started at a slow pace with Mayo wasting a lot of opportunities, as Cork began to settle down more quickly. Cork took the lead with some excellent scores from Brian Hurley in the opening part of the first half. Mayo took longer to find their shooting boots, but when they did get going they got right back into the game. The game was point for point for most of the rest of the first half with a tense atmosphere developing between both sides.

The second half saw Mayo exert some control over the game and they looked like pulling away as they built up some a big lead with great points from Alan Dillon and Andy Moran. Mayo stepped off the gas which allowed the rebels back into the game and the reliable Donnacha O’Connor notched up 1-3 for his side with a superbly well taken goal to reel back the westerners. Mayo remained composed and their patience paid off when Aidan O’Shea rounded the Cork goalie Ken O’Halloran to give Mayo a much needed boost. It was to be tense once more as straight after this Brian Hurley cut through the Mayo cover to blast his shot to the Mayo net to keep the rebels within the game. Mayo seemed a little nerve wrecked after conceding this goal, but they stuck to their task and added some late points to ensure their victory despite some late pressure from Cork. Continue reading →

GAA: Mayo Battle Rebels As Kerry Face Tribesmen

Cork v Mayo

This will be by far the game of the weekend with Mayo having failed to win an All-Ireland in recent times and this Cork side are looking for some redemption to overcome their poor showing so far in this championship.  Getting badly beaten by Kerry in the Munster final and their near miss against Tipperary will give them all the motivation they need to spark an upturn in fortune. Cork may have made into the All-Ireland quarter final stage but they have been far from impressive so far in this year’s championship.  Mayo will certain fancy their chances against the rebels this weekend as they have been far more impressive as the championship has progressed.  Mayo have been doing what is required of them to get to this stage of the championship and have shown some weaknesses in their play particularly in defence and midfield as they haven’t been as prominent as last year. Cork will need to use Paul Kerrigan’s influence once again to link up play between defence and attack and this could result in some problems for the Connacht champions.

Cork have been poor so far in this championship and this is the game that they will judge their championship on. Mayo will likely need to improve around midfield and more so around defence. Cork’s poor showing in the championship and Mayo’s need to perform to the same heights as last year makes this game a hard one to call. Continue reading →

GAA: Donegal And Dublin Lift Provincial Titles

Ulster Senior Football Final

Donegal 0-15 Monaghan 1-9

Donegal are kings of Ulster following a three point win over Monaghan in the Ulster Senior Football Final this afternoon.

Monaghan will be disappointed with their display as they lacked penetration and resorted to kicking hopeless long balls into their forwards whom were completely outnumbered by Donegal defenders.

Donegal showed more enterprise in attack as both sides set up to play quite defensively. Donegal got going quicker and some good scores helped them establish an early lead. Monaghan found it rather difficult to break down Donegal’s defence. Monaghan only managed to get three scores in the opening half as they were reliant on frees and their lack of threat up front allowed Jim McGuinness’ men to lead by two points at the break. GAA: Big Guns To Battle In Provincial Deciders

Monaghan v Donegal

Monaghan and Donegal are set again to meet in this year’s Ulster Final, a replay of last year’s provincial clash and this year’s division 2. Monaghan have been able to break Donegal’s stronghold in Ulster in the last two years and outside of Dublin and Mayo they have been the only side capable of stopping Jim McGuinness and his team. Monaghan will certainly needed to play with a fierce intensity as they did in last year’s Ulster final but it will be Donegal’s turn to be underdogs this time and this could suit them. GAA: Clare Crush Carlow As Armagh KO Tyrone

All Ireland Football Qualifiers Round 2B

Cavan 0-5 Roscommon 1-16

Roscommon cruised past Cavan this weekend at Kingspan Breffni Park for this round 2 qualifier.

Both of these sides played against each other in the division 3 final earlier this year with Roscommon coming out on top in that encounter and a similar pattern quickly emerged.

The first half of this game was poor, with neither side impressing. Roscommon edged a low scoring first half at the break by a score of 0-3 to 0-2. Both sides were wasteful in front of goal.

Roscommon were certainly not intent on repeating their first half exploits and knocked over eight unanswered points. Some good scores from Diarmuid Murtagh put them in the driving seat as Cavan failed to bring their shooting boots with them to this game. Roscommon ‘s blistering start to the second half killed all Cavan hope and they advance to the next round, where they will surely face a tougher challenge. Continue reading →

GAA: Mourne Men Aim To Down Kildare In Qualifiers

All Ireland football Qualifiers Round 2B

Down v Kildare

Down have progressed well so far in the championship since losing their opening round game of the championship to a replay against Tyrone. Kildare will certainly have to address their issues in defence as if the repeat that performance they will be hammered if this Down side has their football boots on. Down are a side that are inconsistent in some ways but can be team that can be unbeatable at times. Kildare need to dominate possession and need to stop leaking easy scores and they could be in with a shout of winning this match otherwise they will be going down and out of the championship.

Verdict: Down

Carlow v Clare

Carlow host Clare for this Round 2 Championship clash, with both sides having already overcome Waterford in this year’s championship. Carlow will be disappointed that they only won by a single point but Clare on the other hand have been very positive in their victory over Waterford while they also put in a strong showing against Kerry. Clare’s midfield will be crucial and I think they may just have enough to overcome Carlow. Home advantage won’t be enough for Carlow come the final whistle.

Verdict: Clare

Tyrone v Armagh

This will be one of the games of the weekend. These two teams that have dominated the Ulster Championship in the last decade will once again be going to battle.

Tyrone will certainly fancy their chances with home advantage and a strong mobile unit of players at their disposal. Armagh will need to play better and need to tidy up how they tackle their opponents. They will also need to stop conceding frees to the opposition which is keeping them in the game. Armagh will look to the likes of Jamie Clarke for their scores, but Monaghan did a very good defensive job on eliminating his influence in the Armagh attack. Tyrone will be looking at Peter Harte and Sean Cavanagh to help them get through this local rivalry.

Verdict: Tyrone

GAA: Cork And Kerry Set For Munster Decider

Cork V Kerry

The famous and greatest rivalry in the GAA renews again this weekend as Cork and Kerry battling it out for the Munster Championship. This will be one of the best games of the year with a close contest between the sides always expected. GAA: Late Point Saves Armagh As Meath Book Dublin Date

Ulster Senior Football Championship

Monaghan 0-14 Armagh 0-14

A late point by Rory Grugan saved Armagh from defeat and from exiting the Ulster Championship. Monaghan will need to address the ability to open up Armagh as they were very reliant on frees to keep them in this game. This could have potentially won the game for the farney men especially with some good free taking from Monaghan Goalkeeper Rory Beggan from the ground.

The game started at a rather slow pace and it was Monaghan that were on top even though the scores were coming mostly from frees while Armagh found it easier to score from play in the opening half. Kieran McKeever and Tony Kernan were influential in keeping in touch with Monaghan. The farney men were quite impressive with the placed kicks and this is why both sides remained level at the break.

The second half was more intense in phases as Monaghan expressed some control and looked like they were going to pull away from the Orchard County. Armagh tipped some scores over as the game approached the 70 minute mark. They got the necessary scores from the likes of Jamie Clarke, Stefan Campbell and the crucial score to bring the game to a replay from the boot of Rory Grugan. Continue reading →
