Bray Wanderers –v- Athlone Town    7:45

Two struggling sides face off as Bray Wanderers play Athlone Town at the Carlisle Grounds.

Another week, another defeat for Bray Wanderers. Their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Dundalk last week was their twelfth this season. More worrying is the manner of the defeat as Bray have conceded 13 goals in their last three games. Alan Matthews and his side need a win and quickly and will see this game as a perfect opportunity to get it.

The 2-0 defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic was Athlone Towns 16th this season. That defeat has left them rooted to the bottom of table and six points from safety. If Athlone are to have any chance of surviving they need to start beating the teams around them, so taking all three points here is an absolute must. Continue reading

Athlone Town –v- Drogheda United    7:45

Two out of form teams face off as Athlone Town play Drogheda United at the Athlone Town Stadium.

Despite seeing an upswing in form that got them four points Athlone Town suffered a setback in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cork City on May 30th. Athlone will see this as a chance to get some more points on the board. A home game, against a woefully out of form side who are leaking goals. Athlone will be bitterly disappointed if they don’t get at least a draw.

The 6-0 hammering against St Patrick’s Athletic was another defeat for Drogheda United, their fourth in a row. In those four games they have conceded 19 goals. Drogheda need a win and badly. They have a good chance here against and equally out of form side, but if the Louth side cannot sort their defence out they will not get the three points they need. Continue reading

Bray Wanderers –v- Dundalk    7:45

Bray Wanderers play host to title chasing Dundalk at the Carlisle Grounds.

The 2-1 away defeat against Shamrock Rovers on Monday has left Bray Wanderers sitting in ninth position in the league. That defeat will hardly come as a surprise to Bray, but they face no respite here against another title chasing team. Manager Alan Matthews and his players will need every bit of their home advantage if they are to get a result here. Continue reading

Bohemians –v- Limerick    7:45

In form Bohemians take on out of form Limerick at Dalymount Park.

Goals from Daniel Byrne, Jason Byrne and a James O’Brien o.g. gave Bohemians a 3-1 away win over rock bottom Athlone Town on Monday. That win lifts Bohs to fifth, four points off top spot. The Dublin side will look to continue their fine run of form by taking all three points from their struggling opponents.

Having not played on Monday, Limerick find themselves second from bottom and still looking for their first win of the season. This game will be their sixth attempt, fail and they may just find themselves falling into a rut that they will struggle to free themselves of. Stuart Taylor and his side know a big performance is needed here and it’s time his side delivered.

Prediction: Home win  Continue reading

League Of Ireland : Team Of The Year 2013

clarke

When anyone asks you to select your Team of the Year, Player of the Year, or even Match of the Year, you start to reflect on the season as a whole. Try think of games that stood out, players that did the extraordinary and managers that pulled off the impossible. Here’s my attempt at doing just that.

Team that stood out? Obviously, the Champions of Ireland – St.Patrick’s Athletic. Their togetherness, ability and strength to turn games on their head proved worthy and eventually led to them coming out with the big prize for the first time in 14 years.

Some Pats players stood out throughout the course of the season for various reasons, none more than Brendan Clarke. Either to win the league or to stay in the division you need a top goalkeeper. That’s your priority. 21 clean sheets for Clarke proved vital. That’s why he gets my number one spot in my Team of the Year. Continue reading

Saints Move To Within One Victory Of League Title Following UCD Win

Liam_Buckley

Four points is all that separates St Patrick’s Athletic from getting their hands on the league title after Liam Buckley’s men came from behind to beat UCD 3-1 at Belfield last night.

Goals from Chris Forrester, Anto Flood and Jake Kelly secured the win for the champions elect , meaning they could potentially wrap up the title when they host Sligo Rovers next Sunday at Richmond Park.

LOI : Five Games Remain To Determine Destiny Of Dublin Trio

images

Five games stand between destiny and fate as a trio of Dublin sides head into the final furlong in need of results for different reasons.

St Patrick’s Athletic now have their title destiny in their own hands having over come title rivals Dundalk last week. The Saints travel to Bray this evening looking to move six points ahead of the lilywhites before they face Limerick tomorrow.

Across the Liffey and the picture is far more gloomy with northside rivals Bohemians and Shelbourne battling to stave off the dreaded drop , something Bohs have and advantage in having thrashed their neighbours last time out. Continue reading

Saints See Off Students To Progress In FAI Cup

ftrSt Patrick’s Athletic put four goals past UCD in the FAI Cup on Saturday evening, a week after putting five past the same opposition a week earlier in the league.

In a bit of a quiet opening to the game at Richmond, UCD had the first major chance as Dean Clarke ran in at the back post to see his header drift wide of the right hand post while up the other end Pats nearly took the lead through Conan Byrne as he smashed his shot up and over O’Donnell’s goal. Dublin Derby Ends All Square

The Dublin Derby between St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers finished scoreless on Tuesday evening, a result that may dishearten the Saints who had the better of the opportunities.

Trevor Croly’s side returned to his old stomping ground on the back of their 7-1 Setanta Cup final win over Drogheda United on Saturday afternoon. While, Saints’ went into this game knowing a win is vital to keep them on the track of the title challengers Derry City and Champions Sligo Rovers.

Pats had the first chance of the game as Rovers looked a bit shocked by their rivals blistering start. Chris Forrester had the chance to find the back of the net inside two minutes. Christy Fagan broke through the Rovers defence and crossed in to find Forrester, who fired his shot straight at former teammate turned Rovers goalkeeper Barry Murphy. Continue reading

Saints Continue Fine Away Form

St Patrick’s Athletic captured their third away win of the season on Friday night by beating Dublin rivals UCD 1-0 at the UCD Bowl.

The game started in a tense opening, the visitors match-plan was to find former Sporting Fingal man Conan Byrne out the right hand side who in turn was task for delivering the ball to Saints target man Anthony Flood in the UCD box.

UCD appeared to be growing around the ten minute mark but wasted a great opportunity from a corner as the ball whistled by everybody in the Saints’ box and went out of touch. Continue reading
