LOI: Big Dublin Derby Kicks Off New Season

irishfootball

A new season is upon us as the eagerly awaited return of the League Of Ireland takes over the Irish sporting calendar for the weekend ahead. Each team starts the season off with a clean slate, fresh aspirations and hope of successful days ahead. While many are tipping Pat Fenlon’s Shamrock Rovers to lift this season’s title, recent years have shown us that the league title will be hotly contested, with a number of teams in contention for Airtricity League glory.

Dundalk –v- Longford Town    7:45

Champions Dundalk, take on newly promoted Longford Town at Oriel Park.

After their most successful season in 20 years resulted in them being crowned champions Dundalk will be most determined to start off their defence of the title by taking all three points. The Louth side will be hoping a good start equals a good season, but will be weary that their opponents will not let them have it all their own way. Continue reading

LOI : Trio Set To Slug It Out To Avoid Relegation Playoff

saints

The League Of Ireland will reach a climax tonight and heading into the final game of the season a lot still remains undecided.

St Patrick’s Athletic have convincingly wrapped up the league title but it remains to see who will finish as runners up with Dundalk currently sitting two points clear of 2012 champions Sligo Rovers.

Derry City head into their final game a point ahead of Shamrock Rovers in fourth place. Declan Devine will be hoping his side can seal fourth with a win tonight to cap off a largely disappointing season.

However the bottom of the table is where all of tonight’s attention will be devoted to. Shelbourne’s automatic relegation has already been confirmed but who will finish in eleventh , the playoff position , remains very much open. Bray Wanderers sit eleventh following a late turnaround in their fortunes, with Pat Devlin’s side behind UCD only on goal difference. Bohemians sit in ninth, two points ahead of the duo and will be uncomfortably looking over their shoulders. Continue reading

LOI: Saints Aim To Go Marching On At Belfield

derry-city

There are two fixtures in the League Of Ireland tonight which are complimented by Sunday’s FAI Cup semi finals which pits Drogheda United against Dundalk (1.45pm) and Sligo Rovers against Shamrock Rovers (3.55pm).

Onto league matters…

Derry City –v- Shelbourne    7:45

Fifth placed Derry City host eleventh placed Shelbourne at the Brandywell tonight.

After the 3-0 defeat against Dundalk last week, Derry City slipped from their long held fourth position into fifth. The league is well and truly over for the northern side, with only pride and professionalism left to play for at this late stage. That professionalism should mean that their opponents here should find the Brandywell a tough place to attain a positive result although it hasn’t been the fortress it was in years gone by. LOI : Sligo Aim To Close In On Table Topping Saints

Roddy Collins and The Athlone team celebrate in the dressing room after the game 27/9/2013

There’s a full card of League Of Ireland action this evening with league leaders St Patrick’s Athletic and struggling UCD the only sides not in action.

This past Friday proved to be a crucial night in the League Of Ireland. Pats are now five points clear of nearest challengers Sligo Rovers , who leapfrog Dundalk into second place after the lilywhites lost to Limerick and witnessed their title ambitions go up in smoke. The Saints welcome Sligo to Inchicore next week in what looks like the title decider.

At the other end of the table Bohemians all but secured their top flight status for another year with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Derry City.

Athlone Town were crowned First Division champions last Friday after beating Waterford United 1-0. Roddy Collins’ side now return to the top flight after nearly two decades in the wilderness. Continue reading

LOI : Five Games Remain To Determine Destiny Of Dublin Trio

images

Five games stand between destiny and fate as a trio of Dublin sides head into the final furlong in need of results for different reasons.

St Patrick’s Athletic now have their title destiny in their own hands having over come title rivals Dundalk last week. The Saints travel to Bray this evening looking to move six points ahead of the lilywhites before they face Limerick tomorrow.

Across the Liffey and the picture is far more gloomy with northside rivals Bohemians and Shelbourne battling to stave off the dreaded drop , something Bohs have and advantage in having thrashed their neighbours last time out. Continue reading

LOI : Saints And Dundalk Ready For Title Decider

loiA season defining weekend lies in store for the League Of Ireland with two key games that could determine the destination of the title and who is bound for the dreaded drop.

All eyes turn to Richmond Park this Friday as St Patrick’s Athletic host Dundalk in what is the biggest game either side has faced in a long time. Only goal difference separates these two title rivals who enjoyed mixed fortunes in last week’s FAI Cup games with  Pats bowing out to Shamrock Rovers while Dundalk walloped Shelbourne. The momentum appears to be with the lilywhites but few would bet against Liam Buckley’s side at home.

Elsewhere , the big Dublin derby between Shelbourne and Bohemians will go a long way to determining who is bound for the relegation trapdoor while Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United take a break from league matters to contest the EA Sports Cup final. Continue reading

Derry City –v- Shelbourne    5:00 (Saturday)

Derry City look to get back on track as they take on Shelbourne at the Brandywell.

After the 1-0 defeat at the hands of St Patrick’s Athletic on Tuesday, Derry City are out of the running for the league championship. A European place is still an option but manager Declan Devine and his side know that they cannot afford to slip up again or their league season will be over.

After the 2-1 home defeat last week against Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne will need a win here to give themselves a chance of surviving. Two defeats in a row have left them second from bottom on 20 points. Manager Johnny McDonnell and his team know that points cannot afford to be dropped or else first division football is guaranteed next season. Continue reading

All To Play For At Decisive Ends Of The Table

mulcahy

The Airtricity League resumes following last week’s FAI Cup fixtures , which provided a welcome break to some clubs. All the remaining top flight outfits avoided suffering a cup upset although Derry City required a replay to overcome non league Bluebell United. The quarter final draw will now be made up of seven Premier Division teams complimented by First Division side Finn Harps, who also required a replay to overcome Cobh Ramblers.

Back to league matters…. Continue reading

LOI : Dublin Derbies Significant At Both Ends Of The Table

CB

The League Of Ireland run in is well and truly upon us with most teams now staring at their final ten games of the season.

This season has been highly significant in footballing circles as there has been a paradigm shift in all quarters. St Patrick’s Athletic appear destined for title glory , thus stealing the mantle of Dublin’s top team from Shamrock Rovers while the surprise package that has been Stephen Kenny’s Dundalk , have claimed the bragging rights for 2013 over fallen neighbours Drogheda United.

Elsewhere , not much has changed as both Sligo Rovers and Derry City remain in title contention while both Bray Wanderers and UCD continue to battle at the bottom.

Tonight’s Dublin derbies are extremely significant for many reasons. Each team needs a victory for their own purpose , the Saints to extend their lead at the top , the Hoops to continue their European push and Bohemians and Shelbourne to move themselves clear of the relegation trapdoor.

LOI : Saints Hooping For Derby Win

fansA big night lies in store in the League Of Ireland as Shamrock Rovers host fierce rivals St Patrick’s Athletic in a game that could have a serious outcome on the final destination of the league title. A Saints win may serve as the catalyst for their first title success in over a decade and it could also spell the end of Trevor Croly’s reign in Tallaght as he has come under severe pressure from Rovers fans. However should Shamrock Rovers maintain their unbeaten home record in the league it will blow the title race wide open.

Elsewhere, Bohemians will look to curtail their plummet towards the first division while Shelbourne and UCD will hope to pile further misery on their fallen neighbours. Continue reading
