NFL: Football Returns As Packers Seek To Topple Seahawks

It’s back. That other kind of football. The American one, where they throw the ball, wear all those big pads and make tackles with the velocity of lorries in fourth gear. The NFL never really goes away, because the draft has developed into a huge event with build-up starting the morning after the Super Bowl, and then pre-season training starts months in advance of the regular season. It is remarkable how the NFL has managed to be a year-round sport even though they only play for four months of the year. Maybe that’s why it is such a relief to have regular competition back now.

Thursday night will see the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, kick the year off with a home game against the Green Bay Packers. No team has won successive Super Bowl’s since the Patriots in 2004/05, but the Seahawks were clearly the dominant side in the NFL last season. Although they have lost some talented guys, they look well positioned to reign once more. Continue reading →

Irish Born Star Looking Forward To Croke Park Classic Homecoming

Ahead of the inaugural Croke Park Classic, an American Football game between top college sides Penn State and the University of Central Florida at the end of August, we caught up with Irish-born kicker for UCF, Sean Galvin.

Sean Galvin was about fourteen years old when his family left the hometown of Bandon, fully immersed in the traditional GAA ways. “We rivalled Clonakilty and the likes around there. I was always into the hurling. Big into Diarmuid O’Sullivan. Sure he used to work in Bandon there for a while, doing construction work up there. The O’hAilpÌn brothers and Joe Deane and all them, they were my heroes growing up.” He hasn’t lost the accent, either. Continue reading →

Golf: Every Dog Has His Day

Matt Every finished off a 2 under par 70 to claim his first PGA tour win at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational yesterday. The 30 year old started the day four shots behind current Masters champion Adam Scott who was playing just behind him with another major winner Keegan Bradley.

The day belonged to Every obviously but the real news story is Scott’s collapse at the end of a week that he had looked infallible. Scott opened his scoring on Thursday with a course record equalling 62 and by the time play finished on Friday evening, the Australian had managed to open up a seven shot lead over the field, the eventual winner Matt Every was a full nine shots behind the leader at the half way point. Going into the final round, Scott had a three shot lead over his playing partner Keegan Bradley and a four shot lead over Every. Scott although a major champion after winning last year’s Masters at Augusta has shown a major chink in his armour. Continue reading →

The Globalisation Of The NBA

Brooklyn Nets kicked off the first global game of 2014 with a resounding 127-110 win over the Atlanta Hawks at London’s 02 Arena last Thursday.

Over the past 35 years the NBA have played 147 games globally, visiting 20 different countries including China, Germany, Italy and Russia amongst others.

Ireland Welcomes One Millionth American Visitor Of 2013

The one millionth American visitor to Ireland this year – Leonie Higgins – arrived in Dublin this morning. She flew in from JFK with her husband Jim. To mark the milestone occasion, Tourism Ireland and Aer Lingus offered the couple two return tickets just before they left JFK for Dublin – for a future visit to Ireland.

The Irish-American couple, who live in Montgomery, in upstate New York, travel to Ireland regularly to attend the races at Punchestown and to play golf. However, this is their first time to spend Christmas in Ireland. Continue reading →

Are The Pacers The Real Deal?

The Pacers have got off to a 7-0 start which is an all time best for the franchise. Defending champions Miami Heat on the other hand have already lost three out of their opening seven games and will not have had the start that was envisioned by their supporters or indeed players prior to the season starting. The question now must be asked: Are the Pacers going to go all the way and keep this incredible form going which will allow them to become NBA Champions or will they drop off over the next few matches like has happened to many teams in the past? NBA Western Conference Preview

The Western Conference has in many ways being forced to take a back seat role as the Miami Heat have ripped up the entire NBA over the past two seasons. The pre season games are now a matter of weeks away whilst teams begin training camps next weekend. The season really is just around the corner and I for one certainly cant wait.

How things have changed for the Dallas Mavericks since they won the Championship not too long ago. Dirk Nowitski has been a pro for the past fifteen years but simply put cannot continue to carry this Mavs team like he has done over the past two seasons. Having lost many of their star performers throughout those two seasons I think it is safe to say that the Mavs are no longer serious play off contenders and must be contempt with a few mediocre seasons as they look to rebuild their team.
