Why Strength And Conditioning Matters

ABC 11 (4)

Hi my name is Noel Flynn and I am a Strength and Conditioning Coach. What is that you may ask? It sounds like something to do with bodybuilding right? Wrong! So before I explain a bit about what Strength and Conditioning is or S&C like it is becoming known for short, I will give a bit of detail about WHY I got into the field of S&C. I have always been sports mad. I played soccer for Hillcrest, ran with Lucan Harriers, swam in Stewarts and played hurling with Lucan Sarsfields but my main sport to this day is Gaelic Football which I continue to play at Intermediate Level with Lucan Sarsfields. So sport has always been a huge influence in the life of myself and my family. As a kid I was playing or competing in some sport pretty much every single day. Sport was the be all and end all really and I gave huge commitment to it, especially the Gaelic and gradually the other sports fell by the wayside. I really recommend kids trying a number of sports as there is something to be gained from all of them but that topic is for another day. Continue reading

Think Pink This October And Be Breast Cancer Alert

cANCER

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Today, it is one of the most prevalent types of cancers in Ireland. Approximately 2,600 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. Although male breast cancer is rare, there are 20 new cases reported every year. Genetic factors, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption and being overweight can increase your chances of getting breast cancer.

It is vital to be breast aware and recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Women between the ages of 50-64 should avail of a free mammogram every two years. It is important to check the breast, armpit and collarbone for changes. Continue reading

The Nutrition Corner

Picture3

The Nutrition Corner is a weekly grab of news and informed opinions on the latest developments in nutrition and health by a qualified nutritionist (both degree and PhD).

Decoding the headlines

We all see or hear about the food and health headlines everyday in the newspapers, TV, internet blogs, the guy down the gym, the old woman down the street…One day you could be reading your morning coffee is the next best thing and the next day its going to kill you!! Most media outlets just single out one eye catching phrase or sentence from new research without going in-depth and try to explain what it means. This is why we are met with such conflicting  advice everyday that confuses everyone and undermines the important messages that we need to take in. Continue reading

News in Brief- No Plane Sailing For Rogue Irish

rihanna

Turns out Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan was sacked ‘on a whim’, NIB’s feeling whimmy this week, or full of whimsy, or whatever the phrase may be. Anyway . . .

Two Tic-tac workers have been offered a sweet deal after they were sacked by the sweet-maker for changing the recipe on a batch of Tic-tacs in a case of ‘gross misconduct’ (this story wins an award for most bizarre thing NIB’S heard in a while). How would you change the Tic-tac recipe, more importantly why? They’re hardly Willy Wonka worthy treats. Anyway, it doesn’t matter; the two workers were found to have been unfairly dismissed and awarded a pay-out in court. Continue reading

Gastric Band Surgery Taking Off In Ireland

auralia

39% of the Irish population are overweight. Between 1990 and 2000 there was a 67% increase in the number of overweight people.

Ten years ago, gastric bands were unheard of in Ireland but now they’re becoming a household name.

The procedure, which was once regarded as a major surgery, is performed through keyhole surgery in under an hour. Continue reading

News In Brief: Baby Horan’s A Hit While Gerry Adams Gets Trolled

putin

The Pope is becoming a regular feature in NIB these days, more so than that Bono fella. And this week is no exception you will all be glad to know. In a ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the Pope’s inauguration Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin told the congregation the Pope isn’t popular because of any polished public image, he’s not an attention seeking superstar and he most definitely isn’t interested in ‘Christians with sour faces’ eradicating the majority of the Irish Church. He’s just a bloke! Though with history’s greatest PR man behind him.

NIB thought we were on to a good story when we saw Vladimir had called on Garda Commissioner Callinan to withdraw his ‘disgusting’ remark about police whistle-blowers, until we realised it wasn’t the leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin, making the call but our own transport minister Leo Varadkar. Disappointment doesn’t cover it, imagine that, Callinan would have withdrawn his comments, apologised profusely and baked cake for everyone if it had been Putin. Continue reading

It Could Be You

lotto

The advertisements say, ‘it could be you’, and it could be, but it’s highly unlikely. It’s 8,145,060 to 1, to be exact to come up with the winning combination of numbers. But what is the National Lottery doing to our society? After the weather it’s probably the most talked about subject in silence filling conversation. The advertisements are becoming more and more frequent. They appear to be targeting a younger market and playing the lottery is now available seven days a week. Continue reading

News in Brief : Backhanders And Blackouts

dobson

NIB is sure we’ve covered this before, but hey, Irish women are the best looking in the world and that’s cause for celebration (drink based traditionally). The ranks made up by a dating site, aptly called BeautifulPeople.com weren’t so positive about Irish men though, ranking them third ugliest on the planet. It’s a small positive though as a few years ago they were ranked the ugliest. Sorry lads.

Talking of beautiful Irish things, we’re going to start selling off our heritage sites to the highest bidder. In yet another example of the Government trying to claw back the cash they splurged on champagne and caviar, they are now going to lease out sites like Dublin and Kilkenny Castles, Derrynane House and Doneraile Wildlife Park to the most persuasive tender. Apparently the rules are that any new commercial usage plans must be in check with the historical heritage of the site so no casinos or hotels will be permitted, unless the brown envelope’s thick enough. Minister for Public Service Reform Brian Hayes said: ‘I don’t know how successful it’s going to be, I have to be very frank.’ Continue reading

The Green Smoothie

The Green Smoothie

I have been making these smoothies for about 5 months now as I find them the easiest way to get all the right fruit and veg into me in one quick and painless drink! It fills you up for quite a while so if weight loss is what you are after then you could use one green smoothie to replace one meal – though I would never under any circumstances suggest you do any of those “detox” diets where all you drink is smoothies; it is not likely to last long and would be verrrry boring! Instead, when I am trying to be slightly more healthy, I have a good breakfast, followed by a green smoothie for lunch and remain satisfied till dinnertime. Here is one of my current favourite recipes; remember there are no rules when it comes to what you put into your smoothie just as long as the amount of veg outweighs the amount of fruit you put in. Fruit is still full of sugar so think of it as a way to make the veg taste a bit better in order to get it into you! I freeze sliced banana, spinach and kale so that it both lasts longer and makes the smoothie nice and cold.

My Green Smoothie Recipe

  • Handful of frozen Spinach
  • Handful of frozen Kale
  • 1/4 Cucumber
  • 1/2 Banana
  • Handful of Blueberries
  • Juice of one Lemon or Lime
  • 1 tblsp. Flaxseed
  • 1 tsp. Honey (optional)
  • Sprinkle of Cinnamon (optional)
  • Grated Ginger (optional)

What to Do:

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender
  2. Cover ingredients with water and blend until smooth
  3. Drink and feel healthier in seconds 😉
