News In Brief: Healy-Rae’s Cross And Gerry’s Not Happy Either

This, was the week Gerry Adams used the word “bastards” and everyone went mental but he wasn’t the only one letting his mouth work before his brain had had a chance to turn on.

Gregory Campbell a DUP politician and “b**tard” really went to town when he decided to lay into the Irish Language, poor defenceless little thing that it is. “Curry my yoghurt can coca coalyer” he told the Northern Assembly, taking the piss out of the Irish phrase: “Go raibh maith agat, Ceann Comhairle” meaning “Thank you, Chairperson”. He couldn’t see the big deal though and also said any proposed Irish Language Act would be treated, by himself, as toilet paper. Charming. Anyone that didn’t get the joke he said, needed a humour bypass. NIB doesn’t know, maybe he thought he was saying something else entirely, like; A man walked into a bar …. Or maybe he was just pissed, you’d need a drink to face the Northern Assembly. Continue reading

Schmidt Produces Some Surprises For November Series

image

A week earlier than expected, Joe Schmidt has announced his 37 man squad for the upcoming November Internationals and though influenced by injury, some surprise calls have reared their heads.

As seems to always be the case in Ireland, out half is the area causing the most debate. The chosen three are Jonathan Sexton, Ian Keatley and Ian Madigan. Paddy Jackson has been the go to second to Sexton for nearly two years now, and his omission may come as a surprise to many. But Keatley has been getting to the required level slowly but surely and with performances like last weekend against Sale under his belt deserves his call up. Jackson does also have a little time to go to return fully from injury and Madigan just provides better all round cover given how many Irish backs are sat up with injury. Ulster fans won’t be happy, but much like Sexton being released back to Leinster during the 2012 Six Nations, Jackson is not to be considered out of the golden circle just because he is being left with Ulster for game time. NIB hopes you have all sufficiently wept at our silence last week, we were away, topping up our milky tan. In the meantime it’s been hot lads, fierce hot. Mammies are making salads for god’s sake, the end is nigh.

It’s obviously getting to Ray D’Arcy who’s going to have the snip, live, on his show on Today FM. The decision came about after discussing the operation with a doctor, as most good decisions do. As the doc explained the simple procedure D’Arcy, in a heat wave reckoned he’d do it, while everyone at home listened. Whether he goes through with it is yet to be decided but rumours are TV3 are already planning a spin-off ‘Celebrity Castration: Live’ to air in the same slot as the Late Late. Continue reading

Gardai Say Larry Murphy Hasn’t Returned Despite Reported Sightings

murphy

Sex predator Larry Murphy has not returned to Ireland despite rumours arising from TV3’s decision to re-broadcast a documentary about him.

Rumours throughout social media had suggested the rapist, who was released from prison in August 2010, had returned home.

The rumours rose to further prominence on Sunday when The Sun claimed that Gardai believed the beast of Baltinglass was back in Dublin. Continue reading

A Year in Brief: Part Two

sineadandmiley

Part two of NIB’s yearly round-up because 2013 was just too good! (Read part one here).

Dublin’s new bridge, crossing the Liffey at Marlborough Street and connecting Luas lines on each side of the river, was on the lookout for a name. A list of 85 possibilities was suggested by the public which was then shortlisted by Dublin City Council to 17. Some suggestions in a comments thread on The Times website included: Bosco Bridge; Daniel Day Luas Bridge (nice); Da Plain People O’Ireland Bridge; Jedward Bridge; and NIB favourite, the Feckin’ Bridge. News in Brief : Backhanders And Blackouts

dobson

NIB is sure we’ve covered this before, but hey, Irish women are the best looking in the world and that’s cause for celebration (drink based traditionally). The ranks made up by a dating site, aptly called BeautifulPeople.com weren’t so positive about Irish men though, ranking them third ugliest on the planet. It’s a small positive though as a few years ago they were ranked the ugliest. Sorry lads.

Talking of beautiful Irish things, we’re going to start selling off our heritage sites to the highest bidder. In yet another example of the Government trying to claw back the cash they splurged on champagne and caviar, they are now going to lease out sites like Dublin and Kilkenny Castles, Derrynane House and Doneraile Wildlife Park to the most persuasive tender. Apparently the rules are that any new commercial usage plans must be in check with the historical heritage of the site so no casinos or hotels will be permitted, unless the brown envelope’s thick enough. Minister for Public Service Reform Brian Hayes said: ‘I don’t know how successful it’s going to be, I have to be very frank.’ Continue reading

Ireland’s First Ever Adult Animated Comedy Set To Launch

newsbag

The first animated adult comedy series ever produced for Irish television kicks off on 3e tomorrow night.

Newsbag, created by Gerard Barrett, who describes it as a mix of South Park and The I.T Crowd, follows Moss, Lenny and Gig, who work for a dysfunctional Dublin-based online news website, Newsbag, run by a rich megalomaniac named Eric Dundee.

Together, the trio pursue hot news trends such as the wave of Twitter-addiction spreading across the country, Barack Obama coming to Ireland, the spud shortage that brings Ireland closer to another famine, Lenny being afflicted with piles, Moss getting kidnapped by a gang of priests to become King of the Priests…and much, much more!

Gig’s main quest in life is to find a long term girlfriend to love and cherish him. He has offered on numerous occasions to pay for this service, but as yet no one has accepted. Gig is a tech geek and everything he does involves technology, sometimes leading to devastating consequences.

Lenny is a big talker whose stories, usually concerning his sexual conquests, are more fantasy than reality. He’s a compulsive liar and as such, usually finds himself in dangerous situations. To sum him up; if Gig was on fire, Lenny would film it on his iPhone for YouTube and then tease him with a bottle of water.

Moss is the wide-eyed third member of the group and hails from a tiny island off the east coast of Ireland called InishPuffin. Moss finds it hard to keep up with the pace of life on the mainland and is generally two steps behind everyone else. Overall he’s a likeable chap, but socially inept.

Their boss Eric Dundee is a New Zealander who made a billion dollars inventing an apparatus for facilitating the rapid birth of a child by centrifugal force. He was paid a billion dollars to stop inventing by the United Nations and has decided to plough his billions into launching an online news company out of Ireland to avail of tax incentives.

Accompanied with an Irish sense of humour and dark wit, and written by an all-Irish writing team with an Irish voice cast, this show looks like the beginning of something remarkable.

In the series premiere, Moss joins the Newsbag team and is overwhelmed by the creepy welcome he gets from eccentric CEO Eric Dundee. Gig is ecstatic when his new Personal Attack app gets approved by Crapple but is equally depressed when Molly makes him move desk for Moss. Dundee breaks the news to staff that Obama is coming to Ireland for a state visit. He wants Moss to go cover it with Lenny. Gig tags along but during Obama’s speech his app goes off, causing the whole place to erupt in chaos. Obama then breaks away from his entourage to go and explore Ireland with the Newsbag trio.

TV3 Director of Content, Jeff Ford, said: “We are excited to be teaming up with Icehouse Media to bring 3e viewers Ireland’s first animated adult comedy series. This unique animation is a fantastic addition to the many home-grown programming and talent that TV3 Group supports. It also highlights the importance of the BAI fund which contributes to the continuous relationship between TV3 and the independent sector.”

Newsbag Creator, Head Writer & Executive Producer, Gerard Barrett, said: “It was always an ambition of mine to create a cartoon and set it in Ireland, so I came up with the concept of Newsbag and setting it around three friends working in an online news website in Dublin. It was the perfect setting for it and a great segue into potential storylines having it set around all types of news stories.”

Newsbag airs Saturday 12th October 2013 at 10pm on 3e.

More Than Meets The Eye

aisMy Tallafornia debut came about after Jay gave me a call asking me would I be interested in coming over to Santa Ponsa In Spain for a few days and I agreed. We were friends before the show so I was glad to know someone before I flew over. I featured briefly in the show last series so I knew what it was all about. I was also curious to learn more about the show as I am from Tallaght and knew Jay so I watched all of the last series.

I went into Tallafornia having achieved a lot in my life already. Viewers still don’t know a lot about me. I have an honours degree from Maynooth. I studied theology and history and also music for a year. I have a CELTA cert accredited by the University of Cambridge making me a fully qualified English language teacher. I am a lifeguard, swim coach, supervisor and sports camp co-ordinator during the summer and I also play the piano having done grades with the Royal Irish academy of music. So I went into Tallafornia wishing to achieve one thing. I would like to raise awareness for cyber bullying, and the destruction it causes to people’s lives. It affects one in four females and one in six males and that number is only increasing every year. If I could achieve anything from being on Tallafornia that would be it. I am fully aware that Tallafornia has many viewers, therefore if I raising awareness even helps just one person then I’ll feel I have achieved my goal.

From my episode last week people have seen me teach Nikita how to swim. Teaching and helping others is just something that comes naturally to me. I am strong minded and make my own judgements and am a person that likes to help and encourage others through positivity and that is what people can expect from me. I am a person that is well capable of standing up for myself, I’m laid back and like to have a laugh.

I hope that as the series progresses people will come to know me better and understand that there is more to me than just a swimming instructor, as many of the papers have pointed out.
